Never saw a scratch in that spot. Wonder how he/she did it.

My bet is from case latch. It’s very common with the lid closing while you pull the guitar off its case, especially when doing that operation on top of a soft surface, like a bed.

UPDATE:

I ended up not getting the Les Paul. I was looking at Reverb and the history of prices and there have been several go for $1500 (including shipping) in the style and color of that one. So I am going to hold out on a Traditional. I did pull the trigger on an SG. It's a 2013 SG Standard in Natural Burst. It was basically half the price of the Les Paul ($700) and it's in really good shape.

Nice SG. The Trad. was nice, too, but unless you can easily and professionally fix a scratch like that, it's a pretty significant blemish and it's not as though Traditional are hard to come by. I think you were smart to pass. Personally, I like the voice on some SGs even better than I do most LPs, so from my perspective you ended up with a fine guitar and a load of cash.

I've never shopped for an SG, but $700 seems like a really good price for a standard, no?

Yeah, $700 is a good deal. About 6 years ago I bought a 2003 SG Standard for $600 and last year I bought a 2011 SG Standard for $750.

Okay, I cleaned the thing with soap and water, I oiled the fretboard, I adjusted the action, I lowered the pickup heights, and I put on a set of .009s. It plays great!!! You couldn't tell from the pics before but it was pretty dirty, it's sparkly clean now.

Nice score with the SG, the trad can wait until the right one comes along.

You guys are so lucky with second hand pricing, in the UK you'd be looking $1000 for a decent SG, $1700 for a decent trad.

Play it. If it feels right and sounds right, go for it. You could have a pro fix the scratch later if it bugs you.

Congrats on the SG! Did that come with a hard case at that price?
