My Dad bought my brothers and I a Marlin .22 when I was 9. He taught us to shoot and all about gun safety. He would fill up bottles and jugs with water or other stuff, so that we got some good visual feedback when we shot. I went on my first solo deer hunt when I was 13...took a nice 8 point with a Marlin .30-.30. I'm greatfull for my experiences with my Dad.

I taught my boy with a Ruger 10/22 and as soon as his arms were long enough, he took to all my bolt actions pretty well. He likes the handguns better though.
A solo deer hunt at 13 is impressive, well done!

My dad was strongly anti-toy gun and pro real guns. However, safety always came first. Even with toy guns they were not to be pointed at people. Oddly, I think that most of my sisters would be willing to give up our second amendment rights based upon the false narrative that it would make us safer.
Wow. If every time we pointed a toy gun at a person as kids had any effect half of the world's population would be missing. I still have an old toy Civil War musket I got when I was 6 or 7. We re-fought that war basically every day.:laugh2:

If anything, my dad was consistent. Guns pointed at people were intended to kill people. So, if your intent was not to kill people then you have no need to point your gun (toy or real) at another person. We used to do the same thing, however, we did it at my friends' houses.

While I'm not a gun guy, I do love seeing the education you guys are passing on to your children/grandchildren. Definitely important that they understand the proper respect and usage of firearms.

For some weird reason this thread has given me an idea for an altogether different thread. Stand by.

I had a .22- when I was 10, I would bike alone out of town to an abandoned pit and shoot cans. Looking back, I am shocked I biked that far along a busy highway with no shoulder.

My Walther has taken 3 rabbits in the last few hours! Great having that second shot!
The only good rabbit..is a dead rabbit.

In the dead of winter, what we call cotton tails here are good eating. They'd look good on the grill. You cannot take them any other time of year but winter as they carey a disease during warm weather, but not in winter.

When i was young, my dad was a bird hunter, but as years advanced he stopped that but never objected to me and my brothers taking the shotguns out.
In fact when i was say, 11 or so, i use to walk right down the street with a 20 bore shotgun to some fields that were about 5 blocks away and nobody gave me a second look.

All other guns were man killers, which he had zero interest in. He thought my choice of using my G. I. Bill benefit to go to school for ginsmithing was a huge mistake, and did not support that whatsoever.

He did take us fishing allot. We always got some can corn, an old close face Zebco junk reel and told to go fish down over there. it also meant we knew exactly what we'd have to eat later on. Same thing as last time.
A loaf of bread and some baloney.

He was never very responsible as a parent but knew how to do allot of things.
I was already out on the block in 1958
Im pick'n up on Buddy Holly, fats, Bill Haley and I'm notice'n cars baby. I mean real cars. Hot rods, bucket tees and 5 window duce coupes. You couldn't help it.

They are a flat out pest here and as. a land holder I’m required to control them by the shire.

You can add another to my earlier tally and I’m pleased to say the Walther is doing the job!
