Near (~20-30mins) from a moderate size affordable city (eg Indianapolis, Columbus, Nashville, Louisville, Birmingham Al, Charlotte NC etc) where you can still live in relatively undeveloped areas. Money goes farther, can have decent amount of land, nice house, close to biking, horseback riding etc.

My wife and I have a couple of rules. Live for today, but save for tomorrow. And, if you can't pay cash, you can't have it. Doesn't matter if it's a guitar, boat, car, or house. We don't have cable TV, satellite radio, or a hundred other things other people have. She brings me home recycled cloths from the dump! But what we do have would most likely amaze you. I don't feel I want for anything.

good way to live __ and we have a similar situation

met my girl working the NYC nightclub scene 16 years ago . we had both been through many ups and downs before we met . . . so for several years we lived the " high life " , and pretty much got it out of our systems

3 years ago we moved out of the city ( as an experiment) , and moved to PA into a small town environment . we started taking tips on living a minimalistic lifestyle from the zenhabits blog . soon we found out that we really enjoyed living this way . no cable television is a big part of that freedom . we don't do it to save , rather to escape the nonsense . on occasion we'll watch a movie on netflix , or bluetooth streaming from online

living far below our means instead of at or above our means is a very relaxing feeling . and can actually be fun

I would be willing to be in the safest place, you know, for an example, just a nicer neighborhood in the city. I'm really not a suburb person. I'd be willing to be a bit less safe just to be surrounded by people and places I like more.

Nicer neighborhood with less stuff. I have a family and sometimes work long hours, I don't want to have to worry about their safety while I'm gone. Also the quality of the school districts make a difference too.

I'd have a hard time living with myself if something bad happened to a family member and we could've moved but chose to stay so I could have more toys.

If you can afford more house but you turn it down so that you can buy more guitars you are a fool. If you buy a house that prevents you from having any money to make car repairs or other emergencies, then you just plain bit off more than you could chew.

I never thought the question would arise where I ask myself if I would willingly live somewhere shitty.

Well since your bringing safety and kids into it, it's always about what's best for the kids and that would be a safe environment for them to grow up in.
