What is the difference in size of the customs headstock from 50s to say 70? which is the same as a 69 I think. The shape is the same anyway. The size seems very close????

Could somebody answer this for me? I posted a pic of a 71 on bottom of last page

This is my 1958 Black Beauty. It was recently refinished by Gord Miller and all appointments are now period correct.

yeah.

i can spot razor blade checking from a mile away.

very different from true checking.

you can tell because the scratch is superficial whereas true checking involves the entire thickness of the finish.

the difference is more 3-D.

still looks nice.

maybe needs a little polishing to make the razor check stand out so much.

It seems most of the refinishing community has moved on from tedious razor checking to doing the real thing. Get it cold, warm it up...instant checking.

Generally vice versa. But the point is that unless you have nothing but time on your hands, and an artisan level skill, the patterns of real checking are next to impossible to accomplish with a razor.

There are only a couple nitros that don't have plasticizer, and will check, and the different brands that do check have a different look in the way they do it. The thing is that to do it right, you have to let it cure for several months.

Regardless, GM needs a razor intervention. So unnecessary. Save that shit for the R9s. Don't **** up a perfectly nice vintage guitar with that.

I agree with you guys. I'm not a fan of razoring even when someone is following a pattern. It just doesn't curl the way real checking does. I'm okay with it this one, just okay, because the previous coating on this guitar was like tar so this is a more true paint job. As I type this, I wonder if I should have just gone with no checking at all.

Skerries, didn't mean to pick on your axe. BTW, my '58 BB has no checking.

dont get me wrong

i think your guitar looks amazing.

hell most people will never even know that it has been aged.

even a few years ago, i might not have even questioned a thing about that guitar as being non original

Most of the time I'm not a fan of razor blade checking. The best example of convincing razor blade work Ive ever seen is by nicolasrivera...Yeah I know he sometimes rubs people the wrong way, and has a habit of getting banned A LOT...He's talented as hell though.

That is far from the best example I've ever seen, and that has many things about it that scream "razor blade" to me.

I think from 10 feet away you'd have more people mistake Nico's goldtop a vintage guitar than anything Gord Miller or RS Guitarworks ever bladed.

Holds up pretty well side by side IMO.
