Not exactly. It will happen to any old Gibson in time, even if very well cared for, likely even if never taken out of the case. It's largely a property of the old lacquer and time, not necessarily how the guitar is cared for. That's for the checking. Now checking filled with dirt and worn away finish etc is obviously different, and requires use. But the checking alone doesn't necessarily

The other name for "checking" is "finish damage".........

Yeah, many old guitars have it, and I'm glad you like yours - but it means someone, at some point in its history, didn't care for it properly.
mine have been played inbetween case time...

Not all of us might agree, but I find guitars with finishing checking (both heavy and light, natural or hand done) can be extremely beautiful. As a tribute to the beauty that comes with age, share your pictures of finish checking!

when wood ages it definitly can look gorgeous,..although some that look overly relic'ed can seem a lil much and not so natural.. its very subjective and opinions will vary

Not true. It happens over time with tempature changes and the nonplastisized lacquer.

True. It happens over time with the owner allowing extreme temperature changes to happen too quickly.

won’t debate you hard on this but the finish on the old guitars gets brittle over time. I will also add that I regularly gigged my guitars for 10 yrs or so and it is impossible to keep one completely new looking if you use it regularly outside your house. If they just look like misused guitars to you ok but it shows they have been used for the purpose they were made for.

The hands down wirst vintage guitar I ever played looked mint. Best sounding one I ever played looked like it had been beat in a regular basis.
