I would love to tap the communal wisdom to come up with a timeline of the Les Paul Standard's major eras.

I'm guessing it would look something like this:

1. 1952-1957 Pre-Standard Era
2. 1958-1960 - Holy Grail Era of the Standard, paf's, toms, etc.
2.5 1960-1968 DARK AGES WHEN THERE WERE NONE
3. 68-69 - Reintroduced with no major tweaks
4. 69-77 - Early Norlin Era - Many changes to Standard include: pancake body, volute, heavier total weight, large head, headstock angle change, etc.
5. 77-80s - Late Norlin Era - one piece mahogany back returns, swiss-cheese weight relief begins in 82/83, volute removed by 1981, headstock pitch returned to the original 17 degrees, 'Tom Shaw' pickups
6. late 80s -2002 - RAWK Era - Return to mahogany body/neck/maple top/no volute, etc/pickups? neck profiles thinner? I'm just guessing here....
7. 2002-2008 - Return of the Grail Era - Smaller headstock, Burstbucker Pros, figured tops, nickel plated hardware,
8. 2008 - Gilding the Lilly Era - Composite neck assymetry, longer tenon, pleking, weird jack, ...

I'm hard pressed to lump the 2008 Standard in the group, the only reason it is there is due to the name, as far as features, they share almost nothing to the prior Standards.

The more fitting model for 2008 on would be the currnet Traditional.
