Les Paul, fake or the real thing.

First, I'm not interested in this LP but I wanted to run it by you guys, posted on CL, it doesn't look right to me.

Neck looks like maple and the cutaway looks odd. The serial # says it's a 80 custom.

Norlin did a lot of different odd "improvements" to the Les Paul in the '70s and '80s. The pointy horn (with slightly repositioned knobs) was a variation that appeared on several late '70s/early '80s Les Pauls.

They're fine guitars. But that sort of thing is why a lot of people disliked Norlin back when they were new. "Fixing" things that didn't need fixing.

I think it's great, however, to see folks here and other places that are finally connecting the dots with regards the 490R/498T PU combination, and how these indeed defined the sound of rock & roll during their period.

The funny part is that since my first Les Paul (and my favorite, and #1 since 94) is a 79, I find that I prefer Norlin's over more "classic" Les Pauls.

Check out Reverb regarding prices and market trends. You will probably find that prices for Norlins are significantly higher now. It may be a long wait for the market to level off, if it ever does.

In the late 80s (the superstrat years) those Norlin Lesters were dirt cheap as used instruments in the music shops. I remember ugly brown and wine red guitars that weighed a ton. Nobody wanted them....

There was a lot bad habits in the hair metal days..... good thing that’s over with.

I own a 1985 American Kramer Pacer with the original Floyd.....bought new.... it still ain’t worth as much as a Norlin Les Paul.

Still with its original case.

Truth is.... what’s in has always been what was originally out.... even the original sunbursts,... they sucked so bad they quit making them for 8 years. Been in production ever since.

That's as real as it gets IMHO. Here's why (in part), and I'm sorry in advance, 'cause I'm going to point something out ya'll might not have ever noticed. That cutaway is wrong and stretched. For a concrete look at one check out the Heritage 80, and Heritage 80 Elites. Same funky cutaway. I have OCD, so it really bugs me. After I recognized it on those, I started seeing it more. Seems to be a late 70's, early 80's problem, mostly with Customs. Like there was a screwed up jig floating around the factory and no one noticed. The guy to ask would be Mike Slubowski, he might know.
