90 minute drive to this buy Les Paul Classic.

I asked seller for pic of serial number an he sent this picture. The number doesn't work out right. It leads with a 12
If it were a 2012, it should be 1xxx2xxxx, right?

Using two online date/serial number website, neither could decode it. They both work fine on my other two LPs.

These are the four pictures from the add. I noticed the knobs were different, and tuners are different between the pictures. Also, if it is a Classic there's been some pickup modding...either swapped or covers added..right?

Also, vintage tuners in the main photo, but back of headstock doesn't show screw holes.

The guitar & case seem legit, but phots are ...odd...

"Gibson Les Paul Classic Electric Guitar - HoneyBurst. Only has been out of the case twice. Rosewood fingerboard. Absolutely beautiful guitar. Comes with original paperwork."

None of these pics are of the same guitar.......Blank TR cover in one pic and the Classic TR cover with the Grovers in the other. RUN.

EDIT: My bad... Grovers did come stock on the Classic in some years.

The year is the first digit and the fifth. So 1 and 9. This is a 2019 model.

At any rate, it appears the seller is not being upfront. I'd walk without pause.

Historically Classic's had the last two digits of the year as the first two numbers in the serial #. So that lines up. There are a bunch of pics that don't add up to though, bunch of knob and tr cover gymnastics, with swapped tuners, and poor resolution pics.

Get cavity shots and shots of the truss rod nut before you go look at it. It does appear to have off pink neck binding. They started plekking them in '06, carefully inspect the frets with a rocker. Sort of has a Stratosphere husk look to it, could be a decent fake too. Truss rod nut will tell you for sure.

It would be weird to fake a classic though…
but there’s always a first

I can see the made in USA stamp in the first thread. But it is almost like it is 3 different guitars. I'd move on regardless...

I missed the headstock script, Classic's say Classic for that era.

Buyer beware!

Edit, it's pic's of two different guitars for sure. One is probably a '12 Traditional, not sure of the other. They don't both have the same cluster of birds eyes between the bridge volume and tone knobs.

Yeah, was so focused on the tuner discrepancies that I didn't recognize how different the grain was. Two different guitars. Sketchy.

You are probably going to get robbed if you drive to see this guitar…or lack thereof

Are they wanting cash only?

I've had a little interaction through CraigList messaging. This person isn't very articulate...not that there's anything wrong with that. Also, works until 10pm...so I'm guessing this meeting would occur late at night....not that there's anything wrong with a 2nd shift job...

However, in totality, I'm not seeing much right about the whole picture.

Of course, if I pursue this and get killed I won't be able to come back online and tell all you guys you were right to run away from this deal:rofl:

Gather round... story time!

About 7 years ago I sold a used 2013 Traditional to this guy. He told me he worked late and that I would have to come by after 9 pm. It was October, it was dark out and I needed the money so I went.

I made the 45 minute drive outside of town to the middle of nowhere and the address he gave and found a large commercial looking garage/warehouse. I pulled up and before I put my car in park I got a message from him telling me he would be out in a minute.

When he got to my car he said he wanted to see the guitar inside under better lighting and told me to follow him upstairs, which I did. We walked up the iron stairs outside the building and went in.

Inside was an upper apartment, er, sort of. It was painted all white with off white carpet and was completely empty except for a very large television and a couch. The couch was covered in plastic and there was a plastic sheet spread out on the floor in front of it. He told me to put the guitar down on the sheet and open the case. It was then I started freaking out a little.

As I put it down I heard something to my right and looked over - there was a small kitchen off the living room and under the pale sickly yellow light in there was a young girl, 16 to 18 years old, with her arms folded across her chest and she had a black eye. When I looked at her he snapped his fingers and she disappeared behind a door in the hall.

I opened the case. He didn't even bother to look at, let alone touch the guitar. He pulled a wad of cash out of his pocket, must have been at least $3000. He pulled out some bills and said, "sixteen hundred, right?" I nodded. He handed me the cash and I immediately went for the door. As I was closing it I heard him say, "hey, wait a minute." I didn't wait. I swear I flew down the stairs.

Lesson is, never do a deal if you're unsure, uneasy or feel scared.. because driving home in the cold mid October night air is much worse when you've pissed your pants.

How much are they asking? It still might be worth the trip.

Seller may just have gotten some pictures mixed up when he uploaded them, just send a polite message asking about the discrepancies.

All three of these pics have the same background material.... carpet....whatever it is.... must be from the same guitar.
