Learning Songs/Solos You Loved Before You Played Guitar

I didn't realize I wanted to play guitar until I was around 15, but even as a young kid I knew I loved the sound of cool riffs and guitar solos. One of the things I've loved about my guitar journey is learning some of those guitar parts I loved when I was young.

I've dabbled with most of the riffs that always caught my attention as a kid... but recently I realized there was something I had missed. I was around 8 when Queen released We Will Rock You. The solo at the end of that song always grabbed me. Even in my early guitar playing years I remember hearing it and just closing my eyes to concentrate on it, but I never tried to play it. Over the years I had forgotten about it, until I was driving home from work the other day and it came on the radio. I cranked my stock Nissan stereo as loud as I could when the solo came on, and half way through I realized... I should learn this!

Still being fairly new to 'soloing', I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was within my ability range, and I learned it quickly. I must have played it 30 times in a row, just smiling to myself. :applause:

Anyone else experience this? Learning that one cool song/riff/solo you loved before you played and being excited about guitar all over again?

I guess it was Grady Martins solos and fills back when he played with Marty Robins that was the begining of a life long love of the guitar.

Gradys playing was a curious mix of classical crossed with flamenco, not easy. I remember it took me a long long time to get anyway near nailing them

Oh, that's easy; 'Pinball Wizard', the electric part.
The "E", was the coolest thing I'd ever heard.
Learned it a long time ago; but it still feels the same.

Old favorites I forgot about are fun to learn now, 'I Started A Joke' comes to mind.
'A White Sport Coat.'

Moo, I swear your entry clicked in just ahead of mine.
Grady Martin on Sport Coat? Prolly.

So many to choose from. I think Hotel California tops the list for me. It took a while (years) but I think I've got all the guitar parts from start to finish. Last week I started learning ELP's From The Beginning after it was posted on here and I can't stop playing it now. That's why I love guitar. I can play what my heroes play.

I know you can only play one guitar at a time...... But if you want to play the electric guitar parts, here's a lesson I did years ago. I hope this helps!

I've always loved Man In The Box by AIC. Some great gritty chords, some talking guitar, and a cool solo. It was the first song I learned on guitar from start to finish, including the solo. Took a long time, practicing segment by segment until I could put them all together. Then had to add the Wah. A couple of years later, it's still one of my favorite songs to play along with the record, and my GO TO song when I have to play in Guitar Center or another store. Hate doing that.

"Pinball Wizard" intro.(well... the whole song actually).

"Whole Lotta Love" for the solo.
I remember listening to it again and again to learn it (well no YouTube tutorial back then...), the bass part gets into your head so much you think you're going crazy.

I learned the main solo for Hotel California just recently. OMG... it was much harder than I expected. From listening to it, it doesn't sound difficult. It's slow, melodic, I thought "easy-peasy". Boy was I mistaken. The bends have to be perfect, the timing has to be spot on, the flow seems funky (to me) while playing, even though it sounds fluid while listening... crazy solo IMHO. Fun though. :D

Feels great when you can pull it off. I still love playing it. :thumb:
