Rancid is my favorite band of all time - hands down. I've been blessed to see them live, even in my crappy corner of the country - best show I've ever been to. The new album just dropped a couple of days ago, and included w/ the set that I got was the album, an acoustic version of the album, 3 posters, a pick set, and a "making of DVD" documentary. You can watch the documentary on their website. One portion of it is Lars talking about his Epis.

Guess what mods Lars Frederickson has done to that white Epiphone that he plays? I mean, we're talking about one of the most famous punk rockers of our generation, who you can be sure has a bank account that is plenty fat to buy whatever he wants for gear...

The answer is "NONE." Lars plays Epis and he plays them BONE STOCK!

Check out this video clip. Lars has played his white MIK Epi LP Custom - bone stock - on every album he's ever recorded with Rancid. How cool is that? Very, in my book.

Holy crap! that's awesome!!!

I guess I kind of assumed every famous guitarist would have done all kinds of mods to their guitars to get their 'own' sound. I even assumed most of their guitars were made specifically for them. Its nice to see that some bands just love the stock sounds, even off an Epi!!!

Isn't it? I've always had a lot of respect for these guys. Fame hasn't gone to their heads. If you're in to Rancid, you'll enjoy watching the rest of those "Webisodes."

Dice thats very cool. I saw the post on another thread of your band and commented that it sounded like Sublime and Rancid. I had no clue that you were into them.

Definitely a life changing experience for me - I was about... 14-15 when "Ruby Soho" popped on MTV in '97 or so. I've never been the same since!

Here is one more clip of my band (the only other one I have handy) - which is a little more "punk" than the other (we're all pretty drunk and at the end of an hour set - so its sloppy!):

(And, this is the clip that SGMan was talking about from before: )

Man thanks for posting this. I saw this on their website a little while back. I've been a huge fan of Rancid's for many many years now. I always enjoyed seeing Lars play those Epiphone Les Pauls. I think he played the alpine white custom on Saturday Night Live.

My #1 influence, for sure.

Guess who I just got a little email from? JESSE MICHAELS of Operation Ivy! I came across something saying that he had a new band - checked them out on Myspace - sent him a friends request - said "Been a fan a long time - lost track of you after Common Rider - good to see you're still in the saddle." He wrote back a "Thanks" and a link to his new band (which I'd already found).

Check them out here:

What's your favourite Rancid album dice?
I only really know Wolves well and it's incredible.
I really like Tim's solo album as well. A very chill record.

Tim's solo album is great. You can see a bit of that kind of stuff on the new Rancid album (Let The Dominoes Fall). 2 or 3 songs are really laid back like that.

And Out Come Wolves is my favorite, for sure. I really liked the Life Won't Wait album - its killer. Indestructible, also very good. Lets Go - another great album. I hated their "Black" album - 5th one I think. It was real heavy, and not fun to listen to - at least not for me.

I haven't listed to much of Lars' side project band - called Lars Frederickson And The Bastards - its good stuff, I just don't own any of the albums.

If you're going to check out another album though - Life Won't Wait is probably my favorite. Indestructible and the new album are close behind.

Yeah, I was watching those webisodes today and Tim said they were going for the hardest and fastest possible on that album V. I'm guessing that won't be up my alley.

The webisodes are pretty cool, huh? I really liked all of the gear interviews.

If you are happy with the sound that your guitar/amp gives, there is no need to mod it. If it's not broke, don't fix it.
