Well, I would still say the most common culprit here is the nut.
The little trick I described is not necessarily a pass/fail test so much as a quick indicator of a really bad nut.
My point was, if that’s all it takes to get a string to hang up and stay sharp, you definitely know the nut needs some work - or a replacement.
