WOW
I just got back from seeing John 5 at the local opera house in Leb, NH
First off....if he is playing near you ABSOLUTELY go see him. Do yourself a favor and do it
There were 2 other bands playing in support, Dead Girls Academy and Jared James Nichols
I showed up a little late and didnt see DGA so no comments there
Jared James....he has been hyped a lot to me. I see ads on FB all the time and a few of my friends keep saying I need to check him out. I wasnt all that impressed with what I saw online but was excited to hear he would be playing at this show. Some performers are just better live IMO and I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt that he was also
I was a little underwhelmed during his set. He isnt bad at all. I did actually enjoy his set. BUT.....he reminded me of Monster Truck. Riff Rock. Now I absolutely do not have any problems with that I love that kind of music and was banging my head all the way through his set but his songs felt incomplete to me. Something was just missing from the equation. The riffs were there but.....idk. He is a very good player, did a few slower songs that were really great. Closed his set with Mississippi Queen....and a hard rocking version at that. I did manage to meet him after the show and he is a very very nice down to earth guy. He is worth checking out, I dont think he is bad by any means like I said I enjoyed the set (got better after the first 2 songs the sound mix was VERY heavy on the drums couldnt hear the guitar at all)
Then came John 5. The stage is set with inflatable halloween decorations while there is a mix of 80s slasher soundtracks playing between childrens music. Definitely a very different ambiance being built here
Lights go down....amp cabnets turn to tv screens (through the whole show playing select cuts from the "classic" horror movies) and John 5 starts
From here on its a daze....because the guy is that damn good
The first 10-15 minutes of the set were heavy. Full on rock and roll. Then we had a very hard cut to country western. This man is versatile. Incredibly high gain then all the sudden cleans up and hey we have chickn pickn. Awesome!!!!!
He goes through a song or 2. Then we get a little heavy again but still in that country flavor. Then during a break in the song where the bass and drums are grooving ---- John pulls out a mandolin. Now we have a guy shredding on a mandolin. Then back to a Tele. Back to mandolin. Then a fricken banjo shows up!!! Seamlessly in the same song without missing a single beat the man changes instruments drastically 5 times in a 4 minute song. AWESOME!!!
Last 20 or so minutes of the show was a mashup of a ton of song covers, Zeppelin, Queen, Van Halen, Rush, Manson, Zombie and everyone inbetween. I believe the show was ended early due to town regulations on sound...they sounded like they could have kept playing for a good 20-30 minutes easy. That part of the show was 1 hour 14 minutes
Just do yourselves a favor and go see him if hes coming near you
