I started listening to Zeppelin a few weeks ago, and Jimmy Page is an incredible guitarist! The question I have for you guys, is, how the hell did he get his Lester to sound like that at the beginning of "Whole Lotta Love"?

The famous "Jimmy Page Wiring" ? Coil taps? doesn't sound like straight up bridge pup to me!

Thanks!

And a lot of ambient sound. Try this, if you haven't already.

Just listen to the intro part before the bass comes in.

Pan right: you will hear the direct mic sound. This mic is a couple of centimeters from the speaker cone (12" in that little Supro, I think). Front or back doesn't matter a great deal. You can hear that this is a very thin, screaming sort of sound. It's quite unfriendly, and probably not the sort of sound you or your band would want to hear in the rehearsal room or on stage.

Now pan left: what you can hear now is the ambient mic. This one sounds like it's somewhere down the hallway or outside the studio. It's got a clear reflective slap back on it, and tonally it's just mud with high ringing transients. No mids at all (I suspect the use of EQ on the console here).

Now go middle. What you're now hearing is the crafted sound: it's direct, obnoxious, screaming and spitting right in your face, while being huge, airy and oozing DEPTH, and best of all, it does all of this AT THE SAME TIME.

Distance means depth.

Amen.

I wasn't even sure what to label it as!!!

Hey good luck nailing that Zep tone!!! I's a revelation to dicover how many sound we all thought were coming out of Number 1 really came from that Tele! Of course, his live setup was totally different than his studio stuff.

Page didn't have coil splits installed until the '80s. In studio he used lots of different mic placements as previously posted.

Thanks for the help once again, everybody! It does sound more like the track with the Telecaster, and when you listen to the audio, left and right, you really figure out how the whole sound comes together. I don't really plan on recording a version of the song, so I won't get the exact sound, but it's nice to know which guitar to use if I happen to play a cover! Thanks!

Page says Whole Lotta Love was the LP through a Vox Super Beatle. Now whether or not he was referring to the whole song or just the solo isn't clear. The Super Beatle is all over the second album though, no evidence of the Supro. However some Supros seem to get similar in tone, this is a clip from a guy on another forum, forget the model, a small 6V6 loaded one though. Supro Clip Not saying that proves he used a Supro for the main riff, certainly didn't nail it, interesting none the less. Personally though I have no reason to doubt Page on this one, sounds like the LP through a Super Beatle.

The only evidence of the Telecaster being used on II is the story of Heartbreaker, minus the solo, being recorded in January '69 through the Transonic amps. Page claims #1 being the guitar for II, Eddie Kramer seems to think he used the Black Beauty though. And as mentioned the man himself did not use the Jimmy Page wiring during Led Zeppelin.

Ya beat me to it Ledzeppy. He had the Paul for Zep 2. Most of us, if any, could'nt make Led Zep 1 sound like it does which was mostly the Tele and a Supro. You know, with the whole studio, musical genius thing happening. Not to mention the Era and available technology.
