Not being a huge Metallica fan I wasn't familiar with this guitar 'til about an hour ago, and I know this guitar has been discussed before, but after some digging I'm still curious to know what the switching on this one does?

If it's like James' other Les Pauls, the bottom switch is the pickup switch and the top switch is inactive.

If I remember correctly, it's not a real burst but a modded and relic'ed reissue.

EMGs in a reissue is not something you see everyday.

I guess he must have the same problem I have. I'm always hitting the switch when strumming so I bought a guitar to modify and solve the issue.

The plan is to add the second pickup and a switch roughly where the bridge volume knob should be.

I didn't know there were other models already like that.

Cool project!

Eddie Van Halen had a different, and very simple, way of getting around the issue: Reversing the switch. Up is bridge, down is neck. No more bumping the switch when you're thrashing or tapping.

I don’t even think it’s a reissue. It appears to have a Nashville bridge…
Yeah - a bit of digging seems to suggest it was relic'd by Nash (someone else I'd never heard of before yesterday! )

I think I could hazard a decent guess, but what's a rimburst?

It's what happens after eating Taco Bell

But I think the real answer is that the burst stays near the edges as opposed to the teardrop shaped bursts that go a bit deeper near the neck and between the pups
Ahh right yeah - now you mention it I see what you mean.

Cheers.

Due to the fact that I live in the Southwest, we are have natural immunity to the affects of Sonoran cuisine’s side affects, but I’d also argue that Taco Bell is about as close to mexican food as spaghetti is.

But, you’re right about the “rimburst”. I’ve also seen “edgeburst“ mentioned, but rimburst seems to be the common terminology.
