Earlier today, I made the trek up to Greg's place to pick up my newly refretted LPC. It was a miserable, rainy day. Certainly, not the kind of day that you would enjoy making a 4 hour round-trip ride in the car... unless, you are going to pick up your guitar! I haven't been to BCR Music since I dropped my guitar off, back in late May. I forgot just how far away it was. It seemed even further, because I had a serious case of GAS. I was so looking forward to having it back.
It was great to hang out with Greg and play guitars. We shared a mutual love for the intense playing of Brian May and he showed me a tasty little lick, that is a favorite of mine. A run through of Tie Your Mother Down and Fat Bottom Girls.. then, it was on to some Aerosmith. I always did like Sick as a Dog!
I stumbled through the solo to Stairway, testing out the new frets. Four months of playing the Tele will be hard to undo... my fingers forgot how to play a LP scale length
Overbending was the order of the day - yikes!
We compared my Shaw PUPs with a couple of Greg's "players". If I remember correctly, they had Duncan 57's in the neck and A5's in the bridge. I always did like my PUPs, but I think I like the Duncans even more. Perhaps, I will have to drop them in later on.
So, a couple hours went by in a flash and it was then time for me to head back home. The drive home was painfully longer than the drive up there. I suspect that was because I couldn't wait to get home and plug in!
About the refret:
Greg's work is flawless. You can see for yourself - I attached a few pix (sorry, iPhone) of the work. The action is silly low and there is not a buzz to be heard, even with the heavy picking style that I use. He did a magnificent job and I am just happy beyond words!
I really love the 6100's that Greg installed. Compared to the short/fat, worn out frets that were replaced - these new frets are insanely easier to play on. Bends are effortless. Chording is fantastic. I love not feeling the fretboard beneath my fingers. It's like playing on silk threads.
People that say 6100's are like railroad tracks and/or speed bumps must have a very heavy fingering hand. I don't. All I notice is how much easier it is to play.
On a scale of 1 to 10... 10 being best, I have to say that my guitar is now a 12.
I have to publicly say thank you to Greg. He's an ace. It's easy to see why guitar players from all over seek out Greg to work on their guitars. He is an artist (an a ****ing great guitar player, too). An amazing artist.
Next trip, I am playing the '59.... Greg? You hear that?
A few pix for your enjoyment are attached.
