Earlier today, I made the trek up to Greg's place to pick up my newly refretted LPC. It was a miserable, rainy day. Certainly, not the kind of day that you would enjoy making a 4 hour round-trip ride in the car... unless, you are going to pick up your guitar! I haven't been to BCR Music since I dropped my guitar off, back in late May. I forgot just how far away it was. It seemed even further, because I had a serious case of GAS. I was so looking forward to having it back.

It was great to hang out with Greg and play guitars. We shared a mutual love for the intense playing of Brian May and he showed me a tasty little lick, that is a favorite of mine. A run through of Tie Your Mother Down and Fat Bottom Girls.. then, it was on to some Aerosmith. I always did like Sick as a Dog!

I stumbled through the solo to Stairway, testing out the new frets. Four months of playing the Tele will be hard to undo... my fingers forgot how to play a LP scale length :) Overbending was the order of the day - yikes!

We compared my Shaw PUPs with a couple of Greg's "players". If I remember correctly, they had Duncan 57's in the neck and A5's in the bridge. I always did like my PUPs, but I think I like the Duncans even more. Perhaps, I will have to drop them in later on.

So, a couple hours went by in a flash and it was then time for me to head back home. The drive home was painfully longer than the drive up there. I suspect that was because I couldn't wait to get home and plug in!

About the refret:

Greg's work is flawless. You can see for yourself - I attached a few pix (sorry, iPhone) of the work. The action is silly low and there is not a buzz to be heard, even with the heavy picking style that I use. He did a magnificent job and I am just happy beyond words!

I really love the 6100's that Greg installed. Compared to the short/fat, worn out frets that were replaced - these new frets are insanely easier to play on. Bends are effortless. Chording is fantastic. I love not feeling the fretboard beneath my fingers. It's like playing on silk threads.

People that say 6100's are like railroad tracks and/or speed bumps must have a very heavy fingering hand. I don't. All I notice is how much easier it is to play.

On a scale of 1 to 10... 10 being best, I have to say that my guitar is now a 12.

I have to publicly say thank you to Greg. He's an ace. It's easy to see why guitar players from all over seek out Greg to work on their guitars. He is an artist (an a ****ing great guitar player, too). An amazing artist.

Next trip, I am playing the '59.... Greg? You hear that?

A few pix for your enjoyment are attached.

OK.. so, I have no feeling in my fingers.

I've been playing pretty much non-stop since I got home. At one point, my wife came over and pulled the cable out of my amp - then, just walked away. I guessed (correctly) that meant dinner time <sigh>. You can eat when you're dead!

It was truly a NGD for me and I've owned this guitar for over 30 years.

It is, hands down, the best playing guitar that I've ever picked up. I am, however, a little surprised at how long it's taking me to acclimate to the scale difference, as compared to my Tele & Strat. For now, I am chalking that up to the fact that I have not played anything but the Tele & Strat for about 4 months.

But, every now & then, I put tougher some pretty amazing riffs, that actually caused me to stop playing and just say, "Whoa!"

Gimmie a few days and I'll be in the groove.

Thanks Greg... When the "thrill is gone" - I think we'll go for the pups. I can't get the tone from your guitar out of my head. It's just a matter of time... I've been twiddling the dials on the amp all day and I just cannot get what I want.

In related news, I immediately want to put locking tuners on it. I have already ruined the new strings after just one day. I suspect that I will go through a few sets over the weekend. I'm going up to sit in with Pam's band on Sat/Sun - that alone will be 2 sets. I'm spoiled with the locking tuners on the Tele & Strat. They make string changes so easy. I have to find a set for the LP that are "drop in" replacements.

Anyway, thanks again Greg. I hope I wasn't too big of a PITA.

Learn how to string a damn guitar. It takes me 3 minutes.

It looks beautiful. Greg clearly does excellent work. I'm willing to bet it's like buttah...

I'm totally in favor of medium jumbo to jumbo frets on an LP. I re-fretted my '70 Deluxe and it made all the difference in the world.

Enjoy! :dude:

Yea, yea, yea...

I suppose that is the right answer. But, I got spoiled with the locking tuners. I broke a string this morning and changed the set, it was a huge pain in the balls, compared to the 30 seconds it takes to change 'em out on my Tele :)

But, this may all be moot... I cannot find anyone who sells the Schaller M6 top mount locking tuners. They are the ONLY drop-in, direct (no drilling/no mod) version that fits my LP. Specifically, item #7503A.

So, I may have to relearn how to do it the "old fashioned way".

Steve, were you ever able to find those tuners?

Actually, I gave up on them. The only direct, no-modification-required locking tuners are the top operated ones and I decided that they just look like shit.

I forget where I found them, but I got their name by contacting Schaller.

Oh right, so they're not the OEM design. Wouldn't want those either.

I am just happy beyond words!

Hey there,

I can totally understand your emotion since I went through the same procedure just two month ago. A refret costs a lot, but you really get an amazing new guitar out of it. I had played mine merely a few hours during the last 2 years due to low frets. But after the refret, I played the guitar for hours every day!

Norlin + refret= happy ending!

Steve, are the 6100's frets that were used the same size as the original frets? In terms of the original specification of hight and width, I mean.
