is this "half and half" look enough to return Les Paul over?

I can replace it with. this one, but the sweetwater guy thinks the one I have has better figure. Would you swap for this (itis 4 oz heavier - has arguably less figure but more consistent shade.

It looks pretty close to a plain top, which is preferred by many here. But if you want figure, what you have is much nicer.

I think this whole dilemma is why I like gold tops. And still plenty of grain to admire on the neck, back and sides.

Edit: to the OP, I don’t think the new one is worth the swap. I’d keep what you have.

While my money would still be on a swap, I wouldn't go for the one they've offered if it were me.

you guys are the best. I passed on that option and trying to keep options open. no point in trading down or sideways though and you all helped focus my thinking on that :)

Good choice, your current one is a lot nicer than that one.

ok out of the box solution - I'm having them ship me a AAA cherry that is 7 oz heavier (less than the weight of my iphone I'm telling myself) and looks like a possible smoke show on the website pics. then I can compare and return the one like least out of the two. I'm actaully excited to compare and excited to unbox this cherryburst. I know they can look pink on the website but I have a feeling in my bones about this one. Nice dark board too. $200 upcharge for the AAA top but I am happy to pay it if the weight and balance are ok. Heck maybe I'll keep both

It's gorgeous! Looks a lot like my burst and I love it. From some angles it looks like a plain top, others angles it looks mis-matched, and other light/angles it looks like book-matched flame.

yeah the clownburst won't be here till Monday which is that many more days to bond with the bourbon. If it IS a clownburst in real life (won't know till I see it), I'll just stick with the first one with a full heart because I like it more every passing day. It's like paying the price of shipping to give myself a good shoppers choice. nice situation (wish I had been a day faster so I didn't have to wait the weekend).

From those pictures, it is not too much of a clown burst finish, just a little bit I think, not horrible.

possibly less offensive if your first guitar hero was Ace lol. we'll see I'm hoping the end-to-end flame on that will pop so good I won't care what color it is

It’s got potential no doubt. Sweetwater pics can have some odd color or white balance issues. I don’t know the photographic terminology, but sometimes their pics are off.

Ultimately, only you can make that decision. But remember this: when you are playing it, are you staring at the top?

honestly, i will look at it more vertically on my wall than I will play it. I do play it, but I have a job and stuff too.. it hangs in my home office. but I get your point. It honestly looks great while being played - sitting horizontally it looks good. sitting vertically (wall hanger or stand) is sort of its aachilles heel

The first pic is from dealer website. the second two are mine. depending on angle one half or the other darkens and changes figure (makes it look half bourbon, half iced tea). hung on the wall, the half with the knobs goes dark. if I squat down 3 feet, it looks matched. Should I just send this back to dealer and ask to replace with one that doesn't have this characteristic so much? But it is hard to tell from dealer photos if the guitar will do this in real life (disappearing flame trick). It is possible but really not that easy to position it light so both halves pop at once. Any insight or advice? weight balance and tone are great so I'm a little bit torn - but I am hoping any good weight Standard 60s will sound similar so maybe just replace it?

If it sounds absolutely killer, I would not return it. A fantastic sounding guitar is a rarity, IMO, and a little bit of less than ideal cosmetics would not be a big deal to me, in the face of an inspiring and exceptional instrument

On the other hand, if it doesn't really sound any better to you than any number of instruments, then I don't see why you wouldn't send it back and try for a prettier one

To me that is a great looking LP. It gives it some character. I am actually increasingly drawn to tops that have behaviors like that, or have other oddities in the grain, markings, and patterns within the wood. While I love a really nice top that shows from all angles too, to me yours is a top with movement and "life" in it, so I would enjoy it personally.

The real concern is whether you can be really happy with it - or if every time you look at it you will have a bit of regret. If that is the case, you will never really bond with it and you should go for another one. Guitars (at least of a certain price) that end up being points of even slight regret end up being dust collectors in the home rather than enjoyed instruments.

to me, it looks pretty cool having 2 bursts on one guitar . I've purchased 4 guitars from SW and they always looked like or even better than the photos (especially my new standard) .....if you think it will continue to bother you, send it in for replacement...hopefully they pay the return shipping.

EDIT: my unburst changes color in different lighting and I think it is cool looking. It can go from a bright cherry/orange burst to an Amber burst and about everything in between, along with the flame looking different too.
