Hi everyone,
I changed the tuners on my 2010 dot & 2008 les paul plus top to Grover 102nk Tulip heads on Guitar Parts Resource site,
I have to say these are nice tuners not only looks wise but they stay in tune much better then the stock grovers not to mention they were a perfect fit no new holes nothin :), my question is are stock grovers lesser in quality then the Grovers you buy in the pkg? cause they sure stay in tune
better!

I think stock grovers are licensed grovers rather than real ones I cant be sure but there still nicer than a lot of stock tuners on other beginner-midrange guitars out there. I swapped mine for Gibson deluxe tulips.

I think Licensed Grovers don't have the Grover name on them.

The stock Grovers on my '07 Epi Junior say "Grover", and they work fine - the equal or better of those on any of my other guitars.

I got some chrome 6-in-line (genuine) Grovers to replace the black ones on my epi Gothic Explorer, and apart from the color they are physically identical. Easily my favorite non-locking tuner out there, never had an issue with tuning or anything.

Tuning problems have nothing to do with tuners, but with a poorly cut nut.

I'm well-aware, although they do in the case of a genuinely bad tuner. And I said it in response to the OP who suggested they couldn't hold tune. :)

gibson stock tuners are 14:1 higher quality tuners.Epiphones are licensed 14:1 ratio and the better upgrade is the 18:1 ratio aftermarket ones. In a sense the stock tuners on the Gibsons are a tad higher in gear ratio compared to klusons(12).Ratio means that its a more refined tuner and your getting more spins with less turns thats all.

The stock grovers that came on my Epiphone were great.

The stock Grovers on all three of my Epi's have at least one with a tuning peg that rattles when the open string is played. I replaced the stock ones with Kluson Wafflebacks on my 59 standard(required new mounting holes on the back of headstock), on my HCSB I used 18:1 Grovers in Nickel(can't get roto-grips in nickel) and will replace them on my Custon(not sure with what yet).

I have read others post with the same problem and will say the Grovers that you buy in Grover packaging are much tighter and smoother then the stock ones.

I tried to find a definitive concrete answer on this for a while, never could find anything other than opinions. the Grovers on my Epi '06 plus top always felt loose and imprecise. I had .010s on for a while and then switched to .011s, which didn't help with nut binding.

Then I started constantly breaking E strings at the peg, so I said f@&k it, and bought the Gibson Modern Nickels. I didn't care for the greenish tint of the pearloid ones. I also had the nut filed for the larger strings, the intonation fixed, and the neck adjusted, all at Pianos n Stuff in Pittsburgh, they do really nice work.

The new tuners feel tighter and more precise, both loosening below and bringing it back up feel much easier to hit the right pitch. I"m sure the nut helped.

I have vintage Grovers on my Yamaha SG, stock ones on my Epi and a cheap set off of ebay on my Northern.

They all work the same, which is to say, they tune very well.
