I don't really get it either....but check out what a friend of mine posted (she's half black):

For people that don’t understand why this is problematic, let me spell it out for you. If you google why black/brown face is bad, It will give you a laundry list of reasons. It is very hurtful because of its origins. It was and some cases still is used to create a caricature of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous People of Color) and perpetrate racist stereotypes. Someone’s culture & race is not a costume. Especially if those culture & races are marginalized in anyway. As a white person, you can take off the costume & face paint and go back to your privilege. BIPOC cannot. Think about that.

I see both sides but I don't think it's worth losing your job for 20 years after the fact.

It's not black/brownface that bothers me. It's the double-standard that chaps my ass.

Not going to name any names, but there were a handful of celebrities (both black and white) who have done both black and white face, and have faced ZERO backlash. Kind of makes you wonder...

My wife’s take this morning was “Man, they’re making a big deal out of this. Yeah, it’s stupid but it was almost 20 years ago.”. My reply was that most sane people think “Yeah, that’s pretty stupid but 20 years ago, stupid stuff like this was much more common. Thankfully, we know better now.”

But here’s the problem...
Over the last couple of years, the media, the SJWs, political rivals, will absolutely tear your shit up if they turn up this kind of stuff. You’ll likely need to resign, you’ll have to have a press conference where you offer an apology, and it’ll follow you for years to come.

Now that it’s happened to the Golden Boy, the narrative will be “Yes, it was stupid, but 20 years ago, stupid stuff like this was much more common. Thankfully, we know better now.” and the world will move on.

Canada presently has the most racist state in North America: Quebec. More racist than any stereotype you wanna paint on any US state.

When I was in telecom school in Canuckistan a couple decades back, I remember standing on the river on ambassador row looking out and asking a friend that came over from Toronto to show me around, "what's across the river?" She looked at me and said, 'you don't want to go over there. They don't even like each other....much less the rest of Canada.' I thought she was joking. Nawt.

How fun it would be to make up a negative Trudeau ad for the opposition. It would write itself.

Quite offensive - whites will never fully understand.
the minstrel variety of blackface was and is extremely stereotypical and highly racist and offensive. But at some point we have to recognize that there is a difference between Amos and Andy and using make-up to portray a character. The 2 are not the same thing.

"But at some point we have to recognize"

I'm not taking sides - who are the "we" you are referring to? Not trying to piss on a hornet nest or anything ...

If a large group of people find that offensive, why would another large group not recognize or validate that? Has nothing to do with SJW.

It is complicated. Yet simple really. Many of the racial norms I grew up with in white suburbia in the 60s and 70s are longer considered acceptable. I can plainly see that now, but will never fully understand what it was / is like for those who were the target of the outdated attitudes.

I'd like to think I have grown beyond all of that.

Damn, Trudeau never misses a rake to step on. Personally, I could not give a shit. But he is the worst virtue-signaller in politics, so he should take it on the nose. Also, he was 29, and somewhat a public figure, and he should of known better.

He’s a small-l liberal racist. He’s the shit for brains who thinks his emoting is enough to disqualify him from this kind of scrutiny. The white guy who thinks having black friends allows him to say nigger.

It ain’t this event that should destroy him, but a culmination of gaffes. He’s a fuckin clown. Even worse, a silver-spoon. Useless in every way. Hasn’t achieved fuck all except a charmed life he put little work into.

I haven't paid much attention to him, but the impression I get is that the only things he has ever had going for him are Daddy's name and Mommy's looks.

So, you really want to put the tradition of white actors playing Othello in makeup on the same plane as minstrel shows? Really? Perhaps we should revoke Olivier's peerage posthumously?

I really do not know. It is complicated. Just making some observations.

The ability for different groups of thinkers to engage with one another is badly damaged now. I am pessimistically hopeful (if that is possible) that will not always be the case.

Things are easier today. For example, we don't have to put on "black face" anymore...now we can just assume to be black. This is better because you can keep it to yourself, unless you run across someone who's woke enough to see your assumption too.

As for Trudeau, his costume seems trivial and insignificant to me...stupid and silly...but meaningless.

Even weirder is that Disney's Aladdin was voiced by a white actor and was drawn as, at most, "vaguely tanned."

(BTW, in the original Arabian Nights Aladdin is Chinese!)
