So my band wants to cover a Melvins song. Thing is it's really a lesser know Kiss song (I hate Kiss) that the Melvins covered. It seems silly to me to cover a cover.

Also, every band seems to just cover songs and play them the exact same way as the original. My favorite covers are always ones that take risks and change the song up. Like Cat Power-Wonderwall, Johnny Cash-Hurt, NIN-Physical, PJ Harvey-Satisfaction.

What do you all think?

I love Kiss, which song is it? And we used to play Green Manalishi live, definitely more like Judas Priest than Fleetwood Mac's version.

Sometimes someone else does such a badass version of a song that just kills the original.

I agree with you on your observations of the covers you mentioned. There are two ways for it to be done. One is in a cabaret type pub band where you give the punters what they know. It has it's place and it what is required in it's place
The other type of cover is where you take a song and re-work it into something of your own. The result may split lovers of the original tune, but that is not the point.

Really there are NO RULES. Express yourself, be creative and imaginative. Enjoy it.
Do what makes you feel good.

Going Blind is a cool song, even though you don't like Kiss listen to the MTV Unplugged version as well the Melvins and do something new to it.

The punk/rock band I am in used to do a cover of REO Speedwagon's "Take It On The Run." We tweak it and made it our own. It always seemed to go over well.

Absolutely, one of my favorite songs is Voodoo Chile. But I actually prefer the SRV version better than the Hendrix version. My version is somewhere in between, but closer to SRV.

Definitely ok in my book.

Some covers are way better than the originals - I really like a lot of the re-workings that the Deftones do.
