Is $2500 too much for a 1980 Standard?

A guitar is only worth what someone is willing to pay, there is no set value. I sold a 1979 Black Beauty in nearmint condition w/ original Shaw pups for $4200. The guitar previously was bought at Norm's for $3800

That is too much, IMO, though it is a great looking guitar. I bought a nice 74 Custom for less than that about a month ago. I would not pay more than $2k and would be shooting for something closer to $1700. I would also get more details about originality and condition as the seller is pretty vague.

I have always read that Shaw's started in 1980 so yeah, those could be Shaw's. If that is a real selling point for you though I would make sure to get a look at the backs.

They might be Shaws or T tops. It could go either way and I'd actually bet that it has T Tops. You should ask him for pics either way. I do think that's a little high money wise. I would pay around $2k for it, but hopefully less.

EDIT: And yes I just realized I said pretty much exactly everything Mikey did above me. I should do a better job of reading others posts before blurting out my own haha.

Agreed!
My 80 Custom has the T-tops and granted they are fantastic pickups.
Couple of years ago I paid 2500 for the 80' Tobacco Burst Custom and it was and still is iin dead mint condition.
Patience, patience...

whats the deal with everyone buying 80's Les Pauls nowadays and the prices going up. They are SUPPOSED to be shit guitars and I remember buying them when people were practically giving them to me. About 5 years ago an 88 black custom set me back $1100.

The thing that I do not understand is how this sunburst can be selling for $2500.00

I just paid $1200.00 for my '82 Standard two weeks ago. It even has the much loved Shaw PAF's!

Granted mine is in "player condition" and far from mint and is "only" a wine red as opposed to the more cherished sunburst but still?

It is not selling for $2500, he is asking for $2500. There is a big difference. Look at his other listings, he's got a bunch of overpriced guitars that won't sell.

Excellent point. i just wish that he added a Buy it Now feature. I would be willing to spend 2K but that is pretty much the limit.

That and it better have Shaw PAF's in there or I am not interested at all.

Maybe 5 or 6 years ago you could have gotten that price, but now I would say no. More like $1200 to $1500 ($1800 being tops)
