One of my favorite guitarists uses both. The Ts9 has more grit to it while the 808 is warmer and more transparent, when used together, they sound ultimate.

I've heard good things about the maxon od 808. They seem to be better then the ibanez. And over here they sell for a nice price atm. Thinking about picking one up to put under the christmas tree. Here's a demo.

No, Stevie used the Ts-808 most of his career, but later (towards his death) he started using a Ts-9

Yup. The difference in tone the changes would make is insignificant...

Changing something like the frequency response of the clipping stage, or the type of clipping diodes in the circuit would alter the tone in a manner in which you can actually hear it

The only change that had an impact *I* could (very, very barely) hear & quantify is the 100k resistor in the TS-9 that is changed to a 10K in an 808. This change means that the output buffer's negative cycle output impedance is lowered, allowing it to drive what ever it is behind slightly harder on the negative portion of the guitar signal (the output impedance of one effect creates a voltage divider with the input impedance of the effect/amp that is behind it).

I've done a few blind tests on guitarist friends and they can never tell the difference. Swap the Op-amp type, or the clipping diodes - then your talking

The frequency response and clipping style of both circuits are identical, occasionally the opamp used in the 9 series was not the 4558, that is, in my opinion, where the biggest difference in tone comes from.

I guess what I'm trying to say is don't blow mega-money on a vintage 808. Just get yourself a 9 series or even one of the newer reissues and have a little tinker with it. Then you'll find your tone, and will still have that cash spare to go towards a new amp/guitar/stompbox/wife/girlfriend/kid.....
