I play bass, my two friends play drums. One is better than the other but I'm good friends with both of them. I also have a friend that plays guitar. He has his own gear, neither drummers have their own gear, we jam at my house and they play my drums. I have fun with both drummers but one is better than the other. Not sure what to do.
Thats it. You stated your just doing it for fun ..right ? Nothing wrong with variety. The minute band and money coincide for me, I'm done. I can do allot more with phones on at home with as much time as i Need to get it right. But if you're thinking band, you have to take the best one.

i have fun with both drummers, one blasts though, he is a heavy handed drummer and rocks the beat strong and steady as a clock. he knows what im thinking and i know what hes thinking when we jam. he knows when to pause and let me play a lick, and i know when to pause for him to do a fill, we know when to do that together too. the other drummer is good but a little rigid, once we warm up we rock but the chemistry isnt as strong... heres the hard part, the drummer that is ok is my childhood best friend. he would flip his shit if i told him i was going to start a band with another drummer. im not looking to be a regular gigging band with this, open mics for free are fine by me if we did maybe one a month or even one every other month. i just like to make music, which makes me think its ok to just have two projects, the thing is i work mon - fri 11am to 7pm, i get every weekend off, so weekends are the only time i can set aside a long jam. im digging the idea of just having them both work together, but i dont know how that will go over. i just sent a text to my long time friend about it seeing what he thinks, we will see.

After reading your posts mate I would definitely try the drummer+percussionist in the same band. Seen it done often (even in a great indie/punk band) and two bands is a PIA!!!

Two bands is just a band-aid and one that's not gonna stick very long at that. You'd be just be kicking the can down the road. It's a tough call and one I'm glad I don't have to make.

Bling ..the only thing worse than a bass player jamming with two drummers would be one drummer jamming with two bass players.

Give your lifelong friend a challenge. Pick something that will be really hard for him to play....tell him you really want to do it. It will force him to practice it, he will improve. Keep that cycle going. When I was a young player (16, 17) the band I was in picked the most outrageously difficult songs to learn. I swear I did nothing but practice in those days to try to get that shit down. And that was a great incentive to get it right....nothing like the fear of making a fool of yourself to an audience.
