My old company did a trade show there a few years ago. I hadn't been to the city in 15+ years before then. When I got there, I remembered why I never went back.... it's a fucking dump.

If you have never been there, go see it. Then you can always say, "Yea, man. I've been to Nashville." But, keep your expectations reasonable. It's not quite a third-world city, but it isn't fr from it.

Horseshit.

Be prepared to be humbled by the players down there.
The regular guy working in the hardware store or supermarket is just a hack there, but 3 times better than most of us.

This!

Every place that had live music - the musicians were just outstanding. It was some of the very best live music that I have ever seen.

As a tourist I've been there 5 times.

Broadway man........just cruise it.
As Lt Dave says, hit up all the live music joints you can thru the day.
Fucking unbelievable guitar players......everyone of them with Tele's.

In Tootsies they have jars on the bar stating that the only way the servers get paid is with tips.
Bullshit....?
Maybe but I tipped them anyways.

I noticed you can see the same band in multiple bars on the same day.
Seems they just cruise from bar to bar after a couple of sets.

Or sit tight and watch three or four different acts blow through.

There's a great Bluegrass place who's name escapes me at the moment right on the main drag.
I loved that place.

You can also try the Bluebird Café.
It's somewhere else in town.
Some BIG names have been known to show up there to try out new material.
Be warned.......it's a little on the "elite" side.

Afterwards, as far as I'm concerned, the best place to sit and enjoy your evening is B.B. Kings.
There's a few other blues places in town but I liked BB's cause its right downtown.
Felt a little safer there.

One other thing.............visit the Civil War Graveyard.....right in Nashville.
If you haven't been to any civil war sites, it is truly humbling to so so many markers.

Enjoy man.

Most of those acts have a revolving door of players and a lot of times what happens is, you have the band leader or singer who books "shifts" downtown and he or she will then put together a pickup band out of whoever is available. Musicians are always hustling for shifts and you constantly see them posting stuff on Nashville Gig Finder like "hey, I've got a 10p-2a open on Thurs, anybody need bass and BGV's?" or something similar. The amazing thing is how some of those acts sound like they play together all the time. But, a lot of them do play together quite a bit and are familiar enough with each other's shows and arrangements that they knock it out like the pros they are. Lower Broad musicians usually have their own "typical" arrangements for standards and once you know those, you can pretty much mix and match at will without too many trainwrecks.

Don't expect to see anything much on 2nd Ave North very far past Broadway. The Christmas Bomber pretty much destroyed most of that whole length of the strip.
