My uncle says there were qute a few Americans in his WW2 RAF squadron...and one of my brothers (a Canadian) joined the U.S. Army and was in Vietmam in 68/69.

Guys have been joining foreign militaries since time began. Not much to do with believing in a cause, citizenship, etc. but rather looking for adventure or whatever.
My brother never did really much think about. He drove from Montreal down to Plattsburg, NY one day with some buddies....next thing you know he's in Fort Dix, NJ...then Vietnam.
