So my parents lived in Arizona and my mom died last may of pancreatic cancer. My father moved to Florida to live with my sister and he died in January. I am the executor of his estate and went to file their tax returns this morning. Everything was going fine then red flags started popping up on the tax preparer's computer. Long story short, someone has stolen my deceased mothers identity and has filed Arizona returns under her SS# and so she couldn't file their returns. The tax preparer said she will have to contact the state of Az and try to figure things out and said it may take a while and we will have to file an amended late return. Truly a pain in the a$$. There's no liability to me , but it just creates more crap to deal with. Why can't people just get a job and earn their keep the old fashioned way. Anybody else have to deal with this? How long did it take to settle? :dunno:

They called me today, they posed as a government agency, they even had a phony website, very intricate, very dangerous.

These people get off with a slap on the wrist or probation most of the time. I'd like to see them dig their own grave, line them up and spray them with bullets.

Damn, Ted, that sucks so bad. With all that you've been dealing with this past year, something should have been easy.

I wonder if AZ would let you come out and throw a couple punches when they apprehend the suspect?

Oh great. My dad passed last month, and with all the stuff we are still trying to settle, it never crossed my mind that someone might try to steal his identity.

They called me and threatened actions if I didn't send the money immediately via western union, I called bullshit and he said they were sending the police.....(to collect on a tax debt) I calmly told the guy, with the middle eastern accent, that I was in fact an employee of the IRS.

It sucks that every day you wait to file is another day a scammer can get to you.

I propose.... require filing your taxes by mail, get a check sent to the address on your tax return. Checks must be cashed at a bank, where you show ID, and you have your picture taken when cashing government checks. Problem solved.
That's a flawed system, anything done by mail screams for identity thieves. Mail in a paper return? Have every single aspect of your life out there all on paper being handled by so many hands that could be up to no good? That's nuts!!! With all the information contained on your tax returns someone could completely take over your identity.
A paper check? There is a reason why social security is making everyone go direct deposit, it's because of the thieves stealing checks from mailboxes, creating fake id's, or worse yet, washing the pertinent information off the checks and replacing it with their own. Sorry, but your suggestion would most definetly lead to greater incidents of fraud.

Sorry you lost your parents...I hope you get it worked out,

and these ass wholes need to be dragged through the mud and into some very sharp stakes....

I was tooling around you tube and ran into some vids of Hackers, Haking into the networks of those IRS scammers and shutting their systems down.....might make you feel a bit better....

Those convicted of such crimes should be subject to whatever dangerous medical testing is needed at the time.

They lived? Throw them into another study group.
