Ideal rate of twist (MLP firearms and shooting thread)

Hogue grips make all the difference in the world on those guns.
I bought the Crimson Trace model for my 340 and several 642s that I have.
Covering that backstrap and spreading the load out across your hand makes a tremendous difference.

It makes the 642 easily controllable with 38, and it makes the 340 livable with 357.
The stupid-ass little grip the 340 comes with is insane.
Before swapping grips, I did five rounds of 357 just for kicks and lost skin from the web of my thumb in the process.
Stupid move on my part.

I have carried the 340PD occasionally, but it has been relegated to suitcase life.
When I travel, it goes in my overnight bag, so I always have it handy wherever I stay.
I don’t look forward to ever firing it again.

Honestly... I think I broke something in my thumb/palm connection. It was sore ans swollen for a few weeks.

I remember the single most painful handgun I ever fired. It was horrible. I had fallen into a really good deal on a big ol' Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 Mag. The deal included a big box of handloads put together by this guy's uncle or some such. He told me there were regular 240 gr. loads mixed in with hot 300 gr. loads. He said I'd know it when I fired the 300s.

The 300s were heavier enough to distinguish, and though I generally refuse to shoot reloads made by unvetted strangers, I decided to shoot a cylinder of them. As big as that gun was, it felt like somebody was swinging a ball bat and hitting me in the fists. By the sixth round I wasn't even aiming because of the extreme wince I had on my face prior to pulling the trigger. And no matter how hard I'd grip the handle it would still break free, and the muzzle was looking at the clouds.

I'm not opposed to recoil in a handgun, but these were brutal. I eventually traded the gun because of its size. After were made the swap, I gave him the rest of the reloads and said, "there's hot 300 gr. loads in there, and you'll know it when you shoot them."

I like Rugers fine though. And wheel guns too.
But give me slab sides of steel and spring pistolas for all day at the range killing cardboard. Heavier the better.

The weight on this beast is 44 oz. unloaded...just four ounces shy of three pounds. It makes shooting full house 10mm a pleasure, plus it's the finest 10mm I've ever owned by a long shot.

CZ 75D PCR Compact for the small 9 with me. Also holds 15+1.

The CZ 75 Compact has been my primary carry weapon since the '90s. I've had both the steel Compact and the alloy PCR.
I was introduced to CZ back in the mid 1980s when the iron curtain import ban was still in place.
Tanfoglio made the "TZ 75" clone.
Branded EEA these days. It was my first full size 9mm.
Beautiful actual blued steel with walnut grips.
I loves me a de-cocker CZ.

I have a Taurus 605 .357 snubby. I've fired 158 and 125 gr Hornady XTP slugs powered by 16.5 and 21.5 gr of 296 respectively in it. After the first 2 shots with the 158 gr rds I had to put on some light duty work gloves because the soft rubber grip was starting to tear up the web of my hand.

It's punishing all right but it's not unbearable. YMMV

My favorite range load is a jacketed 180 gr. bullet (Montana Gold or Precision Delta) atop 9.3 gr. of Longshot. I chrono'd it in a Glock G20 with a Lone Wolf 6" barrel and was averaging about 1300 fps. And for whatever reason, that particular load has worked very well in a pair of GP100s, Colt Delta Elite, multiple G20 and G29s, a pair of S&W 610s and a S&W 1076 and the Sig. But unlike every other caliber I've loaded, it's super crimp sensitive. I lost count of how many trips I made to the range before I found the sweet spot, but the crimp made all the difference in the grouping. And once I found it, it worked great in everything.

The opposite end of the scale is .38 Super. Randomly pick a bullet, powder and charge and it'll shoot wonderfully. I've never worked up a load for .38 Super for any of my guns, because I've never had any combination that didn't work great the first time I tried it.

Had you been around and reading this thread since Day 1, you'd have seen that pretty much every type of small arms known to humankind has been discussed. Revolvers, lever action rifles, bolt-action and semiautomatic rifles, shotguns, handguns of all descriptions, and the hand-loading of firearms cartridges have been discussed within this thread-- over and over, and at length.

You just happened to join very recently, thence to show up in this thread. That is, you caught them when they were busily discussing semiautomatic handguns, mainly. And here I shall admit that indeed, this particular type of firearm is probably the most frequently-discussed topic to be found within the thread.

But there are also thousands of posts in this thread that had nothing whatsoever with the type.

If you stick around long enough, you'll see other types of firearms being discussed as well. Black powder firearms, the accurization of firearms, silencers (or suppressors, if you will), and sometimes even discussions of how to fabricate or repair firearms of various types have-- and will-- be discussed here.

As far as what one "needs" is concerned, that is very much a personal choice. Please realize that you will not be allowed to debate anything of this nature within this thread. You probably didn't read the OP, but had you done so you'd have noticed that we're not going to allow a lot of debate in here when it comes to the subject of firearms of any type whatsoever.

Sure, we'll let you tell us about your favorites-- and even why you've chosen as you've chosen: that is, what you like about this, that, or the other firearm.

But we don't want to hear about your personal sensibilities, what you think is appropriate, or anything else along those lines.

This sort of commentary is occasionally provocative enough to create heated disputes. We're mainly here to discuss firearms technology-- NOT to prescribe our personal beliefs, sensibilities, or any of the rest of the crap you find on the average firearms-oriented website.

For example, in the OP, I mentioned that we didn't want a lot of blathering concerning terminal ballistics, though sometimes the moderators will overlook such topics when what is under discussion is something along the lines of bullet trajectory and so forth.

Hunting could be discussed here-- and it sometimes is, though I'd say that posts concerning the hunting of wild game are easily the most rarely-encountered of all possible discussions in this thread.

Interesting.... Remington totally killed the PARA-USA brand and they are now made in rocket town north end of state under Remington name...

10mm Hunter is pretty slick.... Same gun... They seemed to have kept some of the model names but dumped the PARA brand totally...

I bought my Glock 20 at the turn of the century.
It’s a Gen 3, I believe.
It’s a long story.

The 10mm round intrigued me as soon as I learned about it being the parent case for the 40 S&W in the early 90s.
God bless Col. Jeff Cooper, eh?

That’s when I bought my first Glock, a 22, and then the slightly smaller Glock 23 shortly after.

The 40 cal is a great round still.
It made perfect sense to me, bridging the gap between the worthless 9mm and the ancient 45 ACP.

I know, I know, I know…
I’ve since reconsidered my opinions on both of those rounds, especially with improved bullet technology coming along.

So, I was quite pleased with my Glocks and the 40 cal round through the nineties but the mystical, magical 10mm continued to interest me.
Even Ted Nugent sang its praises.

Do I take the leap and buy an old Bren Ten?
I saw a few Colt Delta Elites at gun shows, but the prices were $$$$$.

I didn’t really need another Glock.
But the price was unbeatable.
So I did it.
And fell in love.

Sent the barrel and slide to Magnaport about the time Glock introduced their compensated models, but I’m not sure it made much of a difference.
(Also did my first 642 Airweight .38)

15 years ago, I was this close to buying a Kimber 10mm in the 1911 pattern, and I had a hilarious conversation with one of their customer service reps in Yonkers, New York that was worthy of a Seinfeld episode.
So I passed.

As vulgar, uncouth and unsophisticated as my gun tastes are, I’ve managed to seriously consider a dozen other 10mm handguns - and put them down and walk away.

To this day, my 10mm Glock 20 with Trijicon night sights and Streamlight TLR-6 light/laser remains my “Oh shit!” gun of choice.

While others may have some specific recommendations for you for tactical gloves, mechanics gloves, etc., I actually prefer using winter golf gloves. They're made for the cold weather, yet they're usually thinner, and provide greater dexterity/feel than most other gloves, while also being quite durable. I can't recommend any specific golf gloves since it's been quite some time since I last purchased any, but you can always stop by a golf shop and try some out for yourself.
