My hand hurts just thinking of a 30-06 handgun.

First time to the range with my new, used Ruger Bllackhawk in .45 Colt, we shot some 300 gr "Kill anything in N America, up to and including Grizzly and Brown Bear, "+P" rounds, doing 1400-1500 fps even out of my 4 5/8" Blackhawk. OMG, the kick.

The old .45 Long Colt, even in its original black-powder form, was always a brutally powerful handgun cartridge. Stuff that case full of modern propellant and shoot it through a modern handgun that can handle the pressure..... Well, it's the non-magnum Magnum round.

What about a home invasion?

You can't purchase a firearm for self defence purposes.

But you can certainly use it in justified self defence if you have it on hand.
So a home invasion - yes, folks have used a firearm to defend themselves, legally, in some circumstances. It's not carte-blanche to kill anyone who steps on your property.

Locked up, with ammo locked up separately --- so, useless. #criminallivesmatter.

That's not quite true. The storage legalities are probably more complex than they need to be but you don't always have to store them separately.

We found in Florida that yes: draconian punishments for gun violence works like a champ.

It's apparently not completely (or even mainly) the result of a deterrence factor, however.

Instead, what we found was that it was generally the same bunch of recidivists who committed one violent act after another who were responsible for the bulk of gun violence.

And so now we've got a law that will really ruin your decade. We call it the "10-20-Life" law.

View attachment 366279

We've got mandatory minimum sentences for people who use guns in forcible felonies, that will put a man down for 10 years no parole simply for brandishing a firearm during the commission of a forcible felony.

You pull it out and fire it? You just got twenty mandatory minimum-- doesn't even matter if you hit anybody.

If you shoot somebody as part of a forcible felony, you're getting a minimum of 25-Life... you have to do 25 before you're eligible for parole, and that's even if all you did was scratch somebody without doing significant harm to the victim.

Most guys don't get parole for 32-35 years when Florida hits 'em with a 25 to Life sentence.

And here's how well it worked: within 2 years of the passage of our 10-20-Life law, we saw the unlawful use of firearms drop by 41%... and it has continued to drop every year since the passage of the act back in 1998.

It boils down to this: people who are violent are kind of a select cull. And they will actually account for most of the violent behavior out there.

Of course, there will be exceptions.

But that's okay. We lock THEM down practically forever as well! :laugh2:

Rifles in general. Not legal for hunting in Ohio. The exception is muzzleloaders.
For deer, we can use shotgun, bows/crossbows, muzzleloaders, or handguns (centerfire) of at least .38 caliber with a barrel of 5" or more.
OK, I get it. Here in Virginia rifle hunting (except muzzleloaders) is illegal in the relatively flat counties east of the Blue Ridge mountains, for fear of overcarry and accidental woundings. Once you get into the mountain counties, though, it's Carlos Hathcock time.

Although there's a loophole for nutcases who have pistols chambered in .30-06 and the like.........
Yea, states try to restrict to guns that fire rounds that won't carry far.

In Illinois, for instance, for Deer it is only handguns and Shotguns with slugs 20 to 10 guage, limited to 3 rods (surprise surprise), muzzle loaders .44 and up, handguns over 30 cal, 4" or bigger barrels.

I drive 15 minutes and cross over into Wisconsin, and I can use that 30-30, or a 30-06 etc. Except there are restrictions on ammo for shotguns depending on prey type. Deer, only slugs, Fowl certain size limits on shiot. Rifles, no non expanding roundsor incendary, tracers. THEIR restriction on rifles is CENTER fire, .22 or larger. Muzzleloaders .45 or bigger smoothbore, .40 or bigger rifled. Handguns must be .22 CENTER fire or bigger and a minimum of 5 1/2 from closed firing pin to muzzle (which covers almost all 3" barrel or better handguns. Feral Hogs have even less restrictions. Wisconsin is generally more wooded and hilly hunting areas.

Iowa, Handgun must be 357 magnum or bigger for Deer. and ONLY rifles shooting straight wall, rimless ammo (handgun rounds basically), with an expanding round, or rimmed , straight walled, with cases from 1.285 to 1.8", .357 or bigger . So, MOST rifle rds, you can't. However, .444 Marlin, .375 Win and 45-70 are epressly allowed. Iowa is pretty flat.

A Ruger Alaskan in .454 Casull is great fun as it can shoot regular 45LC with the same cylinder. We occasionally load it with 5 regular 45LC and one Buffalo Bore .454 Casull for unsuspecting (but experienced) shooters.

it's silver colored, with a slight greenish tint even.

I had Ruger 10/22 with the grey laminate bought at Wal-Mart in 90s.
That stock actually turned green over the years. IMO became even more attractive

You should try Buffalo Bore 340gr .44 Magnum +P+. That is the most beastly handgun load I've ever fired. Hurts to shoot.

Fun fact: Hollywood used to fill screen gunslingers' gunbelts with (dummy) .45-70 cartridges, because they looked bigger and more badass than the more realistic .44-40 or .45 Schofield.

That's what Hollywood does, NGG. Fills your head with notions.

Rob, myself and countless others shoot regularly, and are sticklers for safety, don't screw our sisters, nor do we wear plaid shirts cut off at the shoulder seam and use a piece of rope for a belt.

You are in for a day of fun and discovery, safe practices and even common-sense put in practice. You'll have a great time, learn something about guns, but also important, learn what the responsible shooting public is truly about.
As a member of the firearm community and a CCP holder, I can attest that the vast majority of lawful gun owners are sticklers for safety. Just wish non-gun owners could understand that.

On a side note... I'd like to see some pics of you and the guys in your sleeveless, plaid shirts and rope belts. Got me chuckling, here.

That’s the reasoning here as well. Just too flat in most cases. NW (Toledo area) is one of the flattest places on earth. The SE part of Ohio (from about New Philadelphia on south) is probably hilly enough to be ok for rifle, but honestly..I’m fine with banning them for hunting statewide. Over carry is always a concern, not to mention the potential for more wounded animals due to errant shots

My buddy does that with his 357 with .38 rounds and 357 rounds - he calls it 357 surprise, lol....

Hmm - we don’t get a lot of home invasions where I live.
It hasn't crossed my mind in 50 years. I know of NOBODY who has experienced a home invasion. They know of nobody who has experienced a home invasion. Sure they happen, but there's always a connection between the parties involved. Keep your contacts clean and all is good.

I've learned a lot about guns and shooting at shit was great. As mentioned, I might go further down the hole and get me some guns! But I still have no thoughts about needing a weapon to protect myself or my family.

However, they are on the rise, here in the US.
