"My entire intention was to simply point out that overall it is not a lot of money. You’d have a difficult time aptly proving different."

OK, then show me evidence that concurs the above as being factual. Additionally, in the context you use the term overall, it is ambiguous.

I'd like your proof! Assuming you have no source to back you up, your above statement is merely opinion and quite relative from individual to individual. I believe I have aptly given you the "proof" you request.

I don't have guitars as expensive as some of you guys, but my most valuable guitar is a limited edition Rickenbacker I bought in memory of my Dad. I've taken it out to play, I just keep a very close eye on it (or my wife does if I need to visit the men's room).

I did build a Strat for gigging with my main band, but it's ended up nearly one of my more expensive guitars anyway with the various parts and upgrades, so I guess that idea didn't pan out.

Let's set the ground rules prior to my response. So, you're implying that $5K IS a lot of money, yes?

I already answered your question in my post. What is it that you do not comprehend about my response to your post ?

Well, i'm and idiot. Comprehension isn't a strong point. For accuracy, you did NOT answer a thing. You're trying to be slick, but no need. A simple "Yes. I personally believe $5K is a lot of money" response will do.

Once you have actually stated this? I will tear it to pieces with precision!

I see both sides of the argument;

$5,000 isn’t likely to make or break anyone in the long term.

$5,000 is a lot of money to lose.

For some people it’s the better part of a 1/2 years wages, for some people it’s a 1/2 a day.

If I lost or broke $5,000 worth of guitars tonight I’d be pissed. I wouldn’t die or anything but I’d be pissed.

All that to say I play my guitars. I don’t gig or even really go out and jam anymore but if I did I’d take whichever guitar struck my fancy.

I went on a cross country trip a month or so back and took my R5 to have something to play. Could have played It safe and brought a Tokai or my traditional but I was in the honey moon phase with the R5.

Do you guys play your "expensive guitars" live?

I was at a show, and I was playing my Les Paul Custom. After our set a guy came up to me and said, "you're crazy for even taking that guitar out". I told him you only live once.

What do you think? I probably wouldn't play out a collector's guitar worth over 10k, but why even buy something like that if you aren't going to plY it?

The guitar I was playing was a 2008 LPC.

Streetglides rudely responded to follow post:
OK, without emoticons it appeared that he was serious.
Zzzzzzz...

Streetglide stated:

"I played at fifty seven strat and a fifty four telly with a bender in it for many years."
Zzzzzzzzz...

If I wanna sound and play my best.. I absolutely will use them.. will the crowd know the tonal differences between what I have and a $400 Epiphone .. probably not. Only people out in the crowd who really care or would notice are the attendees who also play guitar.

I don't mind playing the expensive spread when the occasion calls for it. And they certainly get played at home and for recording and sometimes for theater work (though no one gets to see them).

Story time: I had/have a bandleader (over a decade ago) who had a project, but he wanted me to have a "*Gibson* Les Paul, not one of those copy things." The project required a bunch of mods to the guitar (sustainer, etc.) that were going to run about $1500. So I picked up a Gibson Axcess Custom. $4K at the time. I also wanted a second guitar as a stalking horse for the modifications, but I didn't want to spend the same money. I considered a Carvin single cut (would have been about $2K for the base guitar), but ended up getting an Agile neck-through guitar for about a grand. Both the Axcess and the Agile went to the tech to have the same mods done (the lead times for the guitars didn't allow me to have the cheap guitar done first), and both were presented to the bandleader. *He* listened to both and decided that the Agile was some kind of fancy custom guitar and that it would be the #1. I didn't disabuse him of the notion, so that became the hero guitar with the Gibson Axcess as backup. Go figure.

There are just environments where the expensive guitars aren't necessary or appropriate, and I lose nothing by taking the cheap spread into that situation. I have no ego where instruments are concerned, and ever since a seriously drunk wench puked into the bell of a very expensive saxophone, I've been reluctant to put good gear in harm's way. Prudence over pulchritude.

When in my early 20s I went everywhere with a D-35. I kept my eye on it and never left it unattended. I didn't gig but I sure played a lot at friends' and family's houses. And parks and beaches.
When I did gig back in the day, my only guitar was a Yamaha APX7 and it wasn't especially valuable. I still looked after it, though.

I play my LP Custom Thin, 335 and SG Historic CS live. Bought secondhand so a bump won't completely devalue them.

The only one I never played live was a PRS McCarty Brazilian, these guitars are all about finish, and a bump would have halved the considerable value. I sold it for this exact reason.

This. I like my sound and my playing better with my more expensive guitars and I have no idea why. Actually I do, they stay in tune, they have better pickups, they feel better in my hands. I wouldn’t want to play anything else and besides, I’ve managed to beat them up mostly playing in my studio. If I was gigging would just use a gps tracker incase they were stolen.
