Thinkin' about pickin' up a Lap Steel. I've been researchin' for a bit, and I think I've settled upon the Gretsch Electromatic Lap Steel. The reviews seem to be all over the place, but I'm willing to take my chances, so spare me the "use that money and buy a 75 year old Valco sight unseen on Ebay because it has special mojo" crap

The help I need is purely aesthetic, but it is still help

What do you guys dig more, the Black Sparkle, or the Tobacco Sunburst? Oh uh, here's the link

Gretsch Guitars Electromatic Lap Steel Guitar | Musician's Friend

If somebody smarter than me wants to actually post the pics, that would be cool too. Also, maybe you don't care about whatever lap steel I might want to order. Maybe you want to talk about how you needed some help sometime and somebody helped you outta the blue. That's cool too

When was the last time somebody helped you in a selfless meaningful way that impacted your perspective? The more insignificant the better, far as I can tell

Oh uh, my brain says sunburst, but my heart says sparkle

Sunburst. I thought the sparkle would be the one until I saw the pix. Good luck in your quest!!

Poncho isn't fabulous, he can't pull off the Sparkle.

He's a surly, gruff manly-man who kills things with his bare hands and eats it raw.

..so not the Sparkle.

I'm afraid to offer lap steel advice, as you might pick on me....:laugh2:,
and turn it all political and stuff....

And I'm currently in quite a very scary and frightening position,
and MLP friends are privately helping me out without conditions.
In fact, they are literally saving my life.
Without their help I will literally be dead very soon.
The goodness and badness of folks is very apparent to me right now.

Um, er, lap steel stuff is good and fun.....Just buy one, if you don't like it,
send it back......

Definitely the burst. The sparkle is tacky and cheesy.

Allow me to cast doubt upon your decision:

I have to agree with you there. Its not an LP. Not enough surface to serve the sunburst properly. Most of the real estate is the white neck. I think the black sparkle looks pretty cool with the white neck.

Well, wtf is wrong with me if I dig the sparkle?

Good lord, did it have to be called sparkle?

FFs

I think part of the attraction is that everybody gets the Burst, you know? Of course, maybe theres a good reason for that, I dunno:laugh2:

Keep 'em comin' gents and or lady/ladies, I need all the help I can get

Thank you, agreed

I showed these pics to my girl, and I said, 'which one do you like more?' And without hesitation, she said 'Sunburst', and I said there's just something with the Sparkle, and she said, 'It reminds me of a trapper keeper I had in the 80s', and I said, well, that's what makes it cool, then, right? And then she gave me that look, you guys know the one. Its not like she cares what color I get, I mean it's the music, not the color, or whatever, but you wanna be inspired by the instrument, yeah? You want the thing that gets yer gears goin', that sorta thing?

Also, if you don't know what a trapper keeper is, yer opinion is null and void, no offense

I would take a big pass on Gretsch. First that pick up is set wrong. It should be at an angle like the bridge pup on your tele. Looks I got looks! Steel guitars are butt ugly my buddy. Read the reviews first then you guys can pick out curtains. Joke!

Well, the sunburst is prettier, but the sparkle looks more lap-steely, if you follow me.
And yes, I'd buy a late '40s/'50s Supro instead (not for "mojo", but because I had one - for $25 - years ago. Never got the hang of it, but it was sweet - and a cool pearloid white; looked like this RARE 1956 Supro Valco Comet Double Neck 6 6 String Lap Steel Guitar | eBay , but with one neck. Gave it to a friend for his 30th - he still gigs it 32 years later.)
And if you're not sure about lap steel, my son dropped $99 on a Rogue; no Supro, but not as bad as I expected, and it came with telescoping legs.
