I just replaced my stock gibson 490 pickup for a seymour duncan 59 in the bridge. I have to say the 490 pickup was way hotter than the seymour duncan but i like the tone of the 59. I need help with picking a hotter pickup that has the tone. I was thinking of getting the seymour duncan JB or the alnico pro II. Any suggestions?

You want a Custom 5 to go with that '59n of yours.

HTH,

Good call! I recently had a mahogany body/maple top guitar on loan to review for a mag ...it had a Custom 5 in the bridge and I was kinda smitten by it.

The issue with some guitars +'59 is that it is a bit scooped. The 490 has a pretty ballsy midrange which will make the amp have more crunch and presence.
The custom 5 has the same type of scooped mids in some guitars, but the thinner wire makes it sound more thick.

You could swap an Alnico 8 magnet into the 59 more a bit more mids and crunch as another option.

Would this go good in the bridge?

Yes, and to make things even better, you can move the '59 to the neck so you'll have the same ground tone for both p'ups.

I've had the 59b/Custom 5 in my #1 guitar for almost two years, until I've discovered magnet swapping, so I had for four years an A4 59n/ A8 Custom.

I use this guitar for Jazz now, so it has a Bill Megela (Electric City Pickups) RD-59set, which is the best of the very best in p'ups today.

For the record, I still have an A4 '59n/A8 Custom combo in my #2 guitar, which I actually use much more often than the #1.

The 59 has more output than the alnico pro II.

The JB is a fine pickup but, a whole different animal with a very unique personality that can be loved or hated depending.

Use your 59b in the neck and go with a custom or, custom 5 in the bridge. you should be golden.

As said-you could add a more powerful magnet, cheap to try anyway. A8 or even a ceramic.

HTH,
You are correct! Off topic but, I have played about everything, mainstream and boutique but, it's amazing how good these pickups are. Billy is a mad scientist with these things! :dude:

The Custom 5 Trembucker looks really nice and at a good price. But Ive seen a used Burstbucker 3. Would that be better?
