Posted an ad for a motorcycle accessorie on CL.
Within an hour, a response saying he'll buy it, take the ad down,
he'll pay an extra $50.
Here are the e-mails, edited for privacy.

Hi,
May i know please if u still have the piece for sale.

I owe you a bunch!

Yes,
You can call me at 777.888.0000.
James

Thanks for your quick response, I am quite satisfied with the
condition of the item and price.I'm very much interested in buying the
item from you and I would like to make an outright purchase
immediately so I will advice that you withdraw the advert from the
web. I don't mind adding $50 for you to do that. I will be paying with
a certified bank check.More so, my mover will be coming over for the
pick up as I might not be available to come for the pick up myself
but am OK with the information from the ad. I will need the following
information details to make payment arrangement done asap:
1,Your full name to be on the Payment.
2,Your mailing address including zip code.
3,Your phone #
As soon as i receive all this information and inspect the pictures and
get satisfied with it, i will instruct my secretary to overnight your
payment with the information you provided and also get back to you.

Thanks and God Bless,
XXXX XXXXX

Thanks for getting back to me James.Your payment should be ready for the mail, asap,do get back to me as soon as you have the check delivered to you.
You tell me the best time for the mover to come over for the pick up after
you might have cashed the check. Moreover, do remove the ad completely from
craigslist to be sure it is held for me.
Thanks and God Bless,
XXXX

Thanks.

Hello and how you doing today James? I hope fine.
Good to inform you that my payment has been made out already via my
courier service and my secretary just brought it to my notice
that the payment was issued out in your name and she included the moving fee
with your payment. So, instead of the actual amount, she made out the check for
$2500. This was due to accumulated unpaid transactions undertaken by the mover
in the past weeks and they said they will not come and pick this up if
I don't pay them all together. So once you have the check,i want you
to deduct your money for.The remaining funds should please be sent to
my mover via western union at any walmart store close to you so that
they will be able to facilitate the pick up arrangement and come for
the pick up immediately.
**Please email me at once to let me know that I can trust you to have the
fund sent to my mover**
I would contact my sec for the details of the movers and get back to you asap.

Thanks and I'm waiting to hear from you as soon as possible.

Thanks and God Bless,
XXXX XXXXX

In a nut shell, I'm sitting on a check for $2,500 drawn on a bank I have not
researched, nor plan too.The sig is illegible.
An anxious scammer, who won't give me his number.
I reported this to my local PD, a detective who couldn't have cared less.
I used my work address which is a small high rise.

Should I have a fake attorney email him and say that I died, and all my assets
are frozen?
Tell him I'm in the hospital, I need an organ transplant?

Dice, if you read this you know what this scam is all about, they want my checking account #. Or for me to deposit and Western Union the differential back to him.
Never looked at the item, no phone contact. Incredibly unavailable.
I think I'll keep this fish on the hook for awhile.
Any comments?

I think that you should just ignore this all together and just wait for a real buyer.

Sure they want you to wire out real money before the fake check bounces. Well done getting them to waste the fed ex fee, but I wouldn't have put that in my bank account!

Just forget about it, its just a waste of time even talking to the guy.

The movers, secretary, and courier service are a common thing that they write in the scam emails I get when posting on CL and I never ever response as its a huge waste of time.

I hate how they prey on unsuspecting and or naive people.

Of course, the idea of you dying and the lawyer freezing the assets who now needs 3000 USD dollars to get the accounts moving would be awesome. Let him know that your now dead client has plenty of money in his estate and you would be willing to give the 3000 dollars back, plus the amount of the original check, plus some interest if he would be willing to help grease the wheels.

Going into this, my goal always was and will remain, personal gain.
Just kidding... see the purple.
I would just like scum like this to be brought to justice,
so that some unsuspecting soul doesn't fall prey to this.
If there's a finders fee in it, so be it.
I just despise cowardly M/F'ers like this.

Haha. Classic scam.

I love how people "have secretaries" but cannot write with proper English.

Too bad there isn't a group of rogue vigilantis who address these internet scammers using methods that appeal to the masses.

It really is scary how often I get emails saying "claim your inheritance". At least once a day literally.

A friend of mine was selling a Jeep on CL and took a guy for the exact same ride you did. It was funny and very interesting to see. The lengths they are going to not only convince you but keep real contact is amazing. Ultimately it became frustrating because as you said you just want the scum to get caught. Hopefully someday.

That is the EXACT same thing that happened to me (same email, word for word), and when I called out the guy as a scammer, he threatened to "kill me"! I didn't take any chances, so I filed a PR. After all, the dude DID have my address!

This is why ALL of my CL ads are "Local/Cash ONLY", and I don't use the "Email" feature!

I get those also, takes me about 40 seconds to develop an idea.
Then I leave it on my toolbar and just put the finishing touches on it.

Example:

My name is Mr. Ehab Elbalawi a merchant in Dubai, in the U.A.E. I have been diagnosed with esophageal cancer which has defiled all forms of medical treatment. I want God to be merciful to me and accept my soul, so I want this to be one of the last good deeds I do on earth.
Please get back to me for full Details.
Ehab Elbalawi
Regards.

Dear Dead Man,

I’m guessing you want send me a large sum of money in return I will receive a portion
for my good deed.
No problem, but let’s move things along quickly.
Rather than burden the overworked medical professionals trying in vain to save your life,
afford me this.

Commit suicide. Suicide by firearm, God won’t care, I’ll keep him engaged with a long joke or something.

72 virgins is worth it, I mean what the fuck? Most guys don’t get one, you get six fucking dozen!
That’s like when you shop at Costco and it’s the usual feeding frenzy.
You got like $180 bucks worth of shit in your cart, so does everyone else.
Probably 20+ minute wait, suddenly, a play call, manager unlocks a closed register.
You do a quick scan, your grip tightens on the cart, automatically you adjust your footing.
Before they even announce “aisle open” you’re rolling dude!
Probably gonna get their first, ragheads are rude. And, as Americans,we are afraid of the racism call.
So, my dying friend, there you are, FIRST!
Speaking that mongrel guttural blend of English and Arabic, you complete your transaction.
Exit out to the Kia Sportage, still in your pajamas, or whatever that shit is that you wear.
Your wife, 3 paces behind you, her thongs clicking out a strangely rhythmic beat.
The lingering smell of curry and feet, our only memories of you.

You get to be first 72 times. Fresh, peach tasting 100% pure untouched quiff.
The first three will undoubtedly blow your mind. After that it’s really up to you to keep
it imaginative.
But back to the money and the real issue.
Please, hire a professional videographer, I’ll pay for out of my proceeds.
3 camera’s 3 angles. 1080 HD, 1,000 fps.

If this suits your fancy, gimme a call or mail me back.
I’d go to the wall for you on this one,… oops too late.

Tell him you're having second thoughts, and that as an act of goodwill, you would like him to body paint himself with a giant Chicago Blackhawks Indian head on his chest and to photograph himself with the paintjob on a busy street corner. Tell him that you are a die hard Hawks fan, and that you love the Hawks almost as a religion, and it would be an act of goodwill that would increase your trust in him if he did so. I bet you'll get some funny pics you could post up here in a few days :D

I have a Cartier bracelet on CL for sale and have had every F%$king scammer coming out of the wood work to rip me off ! Using the mover is a staple along with the standard, "Is the item still for sale ? If so, Pull your ad and i'll throw you an extra hundee" all in broken english. The B.S. sceniro's these scum would come up with sometimes provoked me to respond but now it's old and not worth my time.

I have it!
In day or two I will mail him back and tell him that I was arrested 40 minutes
after signing for envelope.Spent three days in jail before I could be bonded out.
Being investigated for interstate fraud.
Federal agents took my computer, the check, and other stuff.
This will scare the living shit out of him.
