A buddy here picked up an SG this weekend. Talking about it last week I was like, "Oh I have an SG in the closet,.. I never play it though."

It was inherited from my Uncle when he died about 3-4 years ago and I just put it in the closet and kept playing my Fenders.

But since my buddy got an SG I figured I'd take it out and play with it and I ended up playing it all weekend. Have to admit it's really growing on me. It's like the growl and sustain of a Les Paul without the weight or bulk. I 'get it' now.

Not sure it's going to replace my Teles or Super-Strats,.. but I like it a lot and have been playing it every day for a few days now.

It's a 2018 SG Standard, nothing fancy, but the quality is fine and the pickups sound good. It does Metallica and 'heavy' stuff really well. Hard not to want to play Sabbath riffs on it whenever I pick it up.

So not really a 'New Guitar Day',.. .but sort of a new guitar day in that I just started playing it.

Funny I've been playing Fenders for about 6-7 years now but it seems like I always end up swinging back and forth from Fender style to Gibson style. I guess I really just like the classic big 4: Tele Strat SG LP. Probably every electric guitar since those 4 has been sort of copying one or the other.

So if you have the big 4 you pretty much have all bases covered.

Hopefully my buddy is enjoying his SG as much as I'm digging mine. His is really cool it looks 70's-ish all natural with a black guard. Cool vibe for sure.

yeah I never really got into them because I just played an LP instead. But having not touched one in many years it feels and sounds very fresh to me. Plus with the exception of my Charvel I've really been using single coils for years so the 'beefiness' and heavy sound of the SG really got me this weekend. It was like, "oh yeah... I forgot how much I love that heavy sound."

There really is something to the shorter scale length and humbuckers and mahogany that just make a really great 'heavy' sound.

I will point out the case is shit and I'm surprised. The handle fell off and I had to use wire to get it to stay on. :laugh2: Really surprised how shit the handle is.

The guitar itself though I'm liking a lot. Kind of a neat feeling having a sleeper in the closet. Feels like a new guitar. Honestly my Uncle hardly ever played it, he got very sick (cancer) not long after buying it. It has the receipt and all the paperwork in the case compartment. So when my Dad found it cleaning out his Brothers place he gave it to me and I just put it in the closet and didn't really touch it. So it's basically brand new, not a mark on it.

my knobs are different though.

your tuning keys are different too. Mine has locking tuners. I like your knobs better.

You had me at SG.

Now you need one with P90s. You may never go back to Strats.

I have to admit it is winning me over.

I have a beat up Tele next to my desk I bang on. And my Strat is taken apart at the moment because I decided to scallop the neck. But now I'm playing the SG at night so..... I guess we'll see.

Still loving my Tele though. I play that every day too. But the SG has the beef.

OK - so I'll out myself as Mal's "Buddy"
Sweetwater photo's because I haven't taken any yet.
Pups are 490R/490T. Bridge pup is really "high" - very close to the strings (but still under the relief).
Absolutely LOVE the Satin Nitro finish. It doesn't have the "vanilla" smell too much, but it has a completely RAW/but smooth finish
I always fall for "Be different" - and the Natural (Walnut) (which is really stain itself, because the wood is Mahogony) seems to not be around very much.
Also, with the Tribute, the Neck itself is actually (lightly stained) Maple. I sort of like that too.

@Olds442

I remembered I had reflectors on my LP (that hasn't left the case since Chicago),... so since I know I have 24 spline Imperial CTS style pots on the Epi that are Gibson spec.......

that's better. I always prefer reflector knobs.
