Recommend it?
5 stars?

I'm a lover of history, and the story is centered around Napolean's invasion of Russia. A good portion of it reads like a Russian soap opera set in the early nineteenth century. Tolstoy's great intellect shines through it, though.

Overall, I enjoyed it, but I can't say it's in my pile of favorites.

I just read The Iliad and The Odyssey as prep for a sci-fi book called Ilium.
Just started the sci-fi and it is confusing. Battle of Troy on Mars with robots,cyber- humans and computers debating whether Shakespeare or Proust was the better writer.

I've just completed reading Tolstoy's War and Peace....the literary equivalent of Lizzo. Thick, boy! Real thick!

Melville's next, Huh? Moby Dick.

No, wait.. Dumas. The Count Of Monte Cristo. There's a back-pocket novel for ya..

I'll expect a book review of both by Wednesday..

I’m not sure I understand what all the fuss is about in relation to Crime and Punishment… I thought it was a pretty crap story stretched out too much and not told so well… it was after all initially a setialised story for a newspaper IIRC.

Cheers.

I thought Crime and Punishment was superb. The main character's descent into madness and paranoia is amazingly written.

If there's a audio version that will make me sleep eight hours straight I'll open my wallet.
