I am so freakin steaming mad. Do you guys realize what UPS does when a Canadian has a package shipped from the States?
I bought another Equator D5 speaker from the manufacturer in California. $150.
Of course I paid UPS shipping fees at the time of purchase...$22.
UPS called me today and told me that my package is being held at the border and that I will have to pay $69 to UPS for brokerage fee, on top of the shipping I already paid for and on top of duty and taxes.
That brokerage fee is almost 50% of the value of the speaker.
I'm not bending over for UPS. I refused the package and had them ship it back to the manufacturer.
F%CK YOU UPS!

Works both ways.
I got a steal on a Carr Slant out of Canada.

UPS held it until I coughed up another $81.00.
Note below may explain the costs.

edit; I do have to give a nod to Canadian Customs.
Last job I had we shipped a lot building materials to US/Japan
auto manufacturing plants in CA.
They were incredibly thorough about the paperwork,
and the description of the materials in the shipment.
Kind of a PITA, but in the overall picture, they knew
what was coming into their country.

That Sucks! I stay away from UPS. Snail mail has always been good to me, even when shipping to Canada. Good luck!

I always prefer USPS. They hand it over to Canada Post and all is good.
In my experience anyways.

Jeez, you'd think Canada was a foreign country, or something!

Seriously, it isn't like it's going overseas. Does DHL pull this crap in Europe? Is FedEx, or another shipper a better option?

P.S. Sorry, didn't see the USPS mentioned before I posted.

I did exactly the same thing a couple of weeks ago. I just received an invoice from UPS today for the brokerage fee. You know where they can stuff it.

Let that be a lesson though. When buying from the US, it's USPS or nothing.

Parcelfarce does the same thing here. I damn near had an aneurysm when I saw the bill they added to a pickup order.

That's bull! Is it a part of the US/Canadian customs? Or is it all on UPS?

Paying custom fees is ok. I have no problem with that. What I don't accept is paying UPS or FEDEX brokerage fees. Those are administrative surcharge to "process" the custom fees.

Man, that sucks! At least you didn't bend over for them.

I totally read this as ups, and not UPS.

Freddy, don't you live near the border ?

I got tired of the brokerage fees too, so I set up an address in Michigan and have packages shipped there. Then I just drive across and pick them up. You still have to pay tax at customs but it avoids the brokerage charges.

You can either set up a mailbox at a UPS store, or there are several package shipping places that will set up an address for you. They only charge a few dollars per package.

I've never had a single problem with UPS. Fedex, however, is slow as **** out here.

DO NOT use anything other than USPS when shipping from the USA to Canada (or vice versa) unless absolutely necessary. You will get ****ed

Yeah that's the kicker. When I ordered the speaker I talked to the president of the company on the phone. He was driving to work in his car, so he couldn't give me the shipping cost but they already had my info on file cause I had ordered speakers from them before. I just told him, "I'm in no hurry this time, just send it the cheapest way" which I had assumed would be USPS.
But you are right. I can drive over to my rental mailbox in New York state in 10 minutes. I'm right on the border...so that's what they are doing now.
