Without the poker chip there is no way of telling if you are playing rhythm or treble.
I've tried it many times and without the poker chips it's a complete mystery.

Its not about nostalgia or living in the 50's. Its about having a feature that has been present on those guitars since they were created...

If we had everything present on products since their inception, the world would be a horrible, horrible place. There's a reason why we innovate on any product -- usually to toss the irrelevant and refresh the product, or to improve on a flaw.

If it's all about having a feature that has been present on guitars since they were created, shouldn't we also be talking about the lack of long-tenon on the Traditionals? Or discuss the several different options of knobs currently being put on the Les Pauls? Or discuss the full vs. half pickguard on the SG?

Not at all trying to be a troll, but I do think this poker chip thing has been blown a bit out of proportion. Yes...they shouldn't have done it but come on guys, the part is $3...

"Gaudy" poker chip? No purpose? Oh, come on. It has two purposes. One is to serve as a washer so tightening the fittings doesn't hurt the finish. The other is to protect against finger wear from flicking the switch. Just because you don't like the item doesn't mean that it has no reason to be present. Some of think the toggle just poking through from nowhere looks pretty ugly against the wood top.

Finger wear? Huh? How does the poker chip minimize that?

Naw. Innovations are made to accommodate cheaper materials, and cheaper methods to produce the same product, while still charging the same price. I'd be willing to bet a Mickey D's burger in the 50s actually had beef in it.

There's a reason why many things made in the 50s are still around and working well. Most things made in the last ten or twenty years are most likely in a landfill.

Lot of finish scratching happens there from fingernails, jewelry, picks etc.

Where is the like button when you need it!

LIKE

That with a '59 Les Paul would be the ultimate combination (and an old Fender amp of course).

I'll say it again:

The Les Paul is supposed to be a "classy" guitar. That's why it was first covered in gold. Later, in Black, the pickguard and poker chip became part of the ensemble. Sort of like a tuxedo, if you will.

A Les Paul without a pickguard is like a tuxedo without the cummerbund. A Les Paul without the poker chip is like a tuxedo without the bow tie. Incomplete.

You can do what you want with your guitars, whatever makes you happy. But in my book, if your LP lacks the tuxedo, then you might as well be playing a PRS or some other knockoff. There's a reason that the Les Paul Traditional was and is a huge success is because it was meant, marketing-wise and build-wise, as a nod to the past traditions.

Why was 2015 such a crappy year for LP guitars? Why don't the new models of LPs come with robot tuners (mostly)? Why do people buy these things? Because, like the Telecaster or Stratocaster, they are timeless designs. They are perfect just as they were created. Sure, some little things occurred that were acceptable, like new pickups, etc. But the core products defined the instrument known as "electric guitar."

In other words, it's the principle of the thing. After doing pretty much everything right in 2016 to correct from the 2015 fiasco, why in the hell does Gibson have to muck around now? Just because they can? I use the term "they" rather loosely...

Oh yeah: GET OFF MY LAWN!

Jeez, I originally posted this thread back in October 2016. It came back to life! Ironically the guitar I was talking about getting at the beginning of this thread was recently sold by me to another MLP member.

I call it a washer. Mainly because that's what I've always called it since I was 10. I like plastic washers on my Pauls.

Cool Ranch.

I'm not a fan of the poker chip. Like all the plastics on the LP, it's a junky item with poor embossing and done up in an ugly color. It's just another example of Gibson's chintzy approach to sourcing parts and materials. I've seen better quality plastic parts on my kid's toys.
