It's quite easy actually, but has fairly limited range of guitars it can be used on. Easiest to do with flat topped guitars like SG's. Using a pickguard supended mouting is not possible...must use mouting rings. The actual making of it is a pain in the ass.
On arched-tops like LP's it must be fit to the guitar. And it isn't possible in the neck position - yet...I lack the tooling neccesary to make some components for that one.

It's a real, true P-90. Full coil dimensions. NOT in a "humbucker form" and not under a humbucker-sized cover, and not a single HB bobbin stuffed in the center of a cover...

Why do so many people want to put HB were P90 were and P90s were HB were? Just get two guitars, one with HBs and the other with P90s, life is much simpler that way. You can alway put minibuckers in soapbar P90 routes.

Quite true! There are a number of mini-buckers out there that give a full bucker sound. Dimarzio Super distortion for one. No hack job or mods required!

I suppose that's fine if you like the pickups that are available for a P-90 route. If not, you have a choice when somebody figures out how to do modifications like this.

Maybe somebody likes a particular guitar overall, but the pickup configuration isn't working for them. Maybe someone wants a guitar with a BFG configuration, but they can't afford a new guitar.

If we always did things just to make life simpler, nothing would ever get done. Sometimes trying something the hard way yields something that makes life simpler in the long run.

here is a pic of my continuing project with a 60s studio goldtop...it doesn't look great, but I have some ideas for making it look cleaner, I will post photos in the main les paul forum when I am done...in the meantime, I thought I would show that I got the humbucker into the neck slot...these are '57/'57 classic pups...it sounds great...you do have to shave some wood on the interior of the slot, no more than an 1/8 of an inch...I was able to get a proper height adjustment for the PU's so the sound is dialed in...

FWIW, I just completed and tested our first hum-canceling P-90 design on Friday.
The report from Andy at THD amps was "Quieter than an EMG"

A couple tweaks to the bridge design are due to increase the mid raunch and overall output.. Going to drop the prototype into the neck of his guitar and see what it does there.

Here's the testing video

If I really had to have a HB in a P90 route (which would be a waste of a P90 route :D), I would probably go with one of DiMarzio's P90-sized humbuckers. Not everyone's taste, but I bet the Super Distortion model would sound mighty nice: DiMarzio.com

An intentional test. Andy had the it maxed, sitting about two feet away from the cabinet. Wasn't bad for unpotted coils.

those dimarzio's sound good but I wanted use pickups with alnico magnets... my research indicates that dimarzio doesn't make a p90 alnico mag humbucker...the ones they do make, all contain a cermaic mag...

This is such an awesome idea! I am happy it works!

I have a Duncan JB Jr tucked under the stock cover of my 1960 Melody and I'm very impressed with how it sounds. Its a Strat size pickup thats not thin or bright sounding at all and it has great tone. I think it s comparable to a full-sized Duncan '59. You didn't say what kind of guitar this is going into, but you would have to come up with some way to mount it. Mine is screw to the bottom of the cavity with a foam spacer beneath it.

The stock cover fits right over it.
