so - i have 2 paf clones that are wound in a typical neck/bridge dc output.

neck is about 7.7 and the bridge 8.3 - when I meausre the indiviudal coils - they appear to be very equal (3.80 and 3.9) and (4.1 and 4.2)

my questio - if I were to swap a coil on each - i'd wind up with a .4 separation between coils - i'm guessing somewhere around 4-500 turns...

is this too far of a coil offset for the pickup to sound good? is this within typicla tolerances of vintage PAFs before they went to auto-shut off?

just tinkering basically :D

It should't offset it by too much(soundwise) I did a bunch of experimenting with pickups and I never had a issue with that.

It depends what you're after exactly, but consider the Seymour Duncan Hybrid pickups. Currently under production is the '59/Custom hybrid, which combines one coil (the '59) at about 4.2K with another (from a Custom) at about 7.0K. I built one myself; it sounded "good," but wasn't quite my cup of tea. For the offsets you're talking about, I think it would work fine, but it would be interesting to hear a few winders chime in...

I think you have to answer your own question by just doing it.

And don't forget to post the results here.

Hey! I have a question from your post!

I'm a retard, so please be patient here if I dont ask this correctly:

The pickup is measured in ohm output... take the 7.7 one for example.

If you measure the coils... which I imagine means unconnecting the twisted wire link that connects the two coils to connect to the "output" wire... then they are LOWER in value... wait... I just answered my own question looking at your post again...

So both coils ohm output values are added together to get one total output number?

That's what you do with any resistors in series - add them up.

OP it won't hurt to swap those as long as you don't damage one of the coils it would be fine. I put more offset than that in mine. You might not even be able to hear a difference in the weaker one.
