Can anyone give me a quick synapsis of how necks are measured?

Strings off, correct?

Calipers placed on top of or next to the first and twelfth fret?

And anything else you can add, thanks!:dude:

Like this

Strings on, use a spacer, dont forget to subtract the spacer.

I bring the spacer all the way to the fret just so I know it isnt moving and you not on top of the inlay (which may not be seated) Don't squeeze too hard, you will make a small indent and you measure will be off...

Ask me how I know....

Also you will have ding that you didnt want...

I do it with strings on.

Take a strap button and tare your caliper with it between the jaws.

Then, place the strap button between the G and D strings at the 1st and 12th fret (or wherever) and use the caliper to get the thickness. Since you used a tare, the measurement will be the thickness of the neck without the strap button.

EDIT: Vic beat me to it. :)

Faber tailpiece insert?

I like to use a Schaller (aka Fender American Standard) strap button.

The geometry works well as the bottom flange goes under the strings, allowing the strings to gently hold it down onto the fretboard.

I'd also do a search in this Section as we've covered this off in major detail many, many times.

:cheers2:

Well, blow me down. I had never thought nor heard of the "tare" approach.

Many thanks guys! I didnt' want to wait for a string change to get the specs, sweet.
