I'm 34.
Guitar: 14, stopped at 28.
Drums: 5, stopped at 9 (moved house). Tentatively in my early 20's. Started taking it seriously at 30.

So you stopped guitar and you’re only doing drums now?

So many times in a conversation, someone will say to me, “Well, you know. You’re a musician.“

No.
I’m not.

I’m a guy who owns a bunch of nice guitars.
I am in no way a “musician.”

Or an arteest

Reminds me of the difference between drunks and alcoholics.
I don’t remember where the line came from…

Someone called someone else an alcoholic.
In response, the guy said, “I’m not an alcoholic, I’m a drunk. Alcoholics go to meetings.”
Ted Nugent said it best: "I'm a Sonic Commando and my guitar is my M-16."

First guitar was a 15 lb Hondo 2 Lp. I stunk. Mel Bay. 12 years old....18 still stunk....trying to play Metal.
.....farted around with guitar....

Big comeback at 27.....WAS GREAT...CROSSROADS WORKED...still stink at covers...but originals are bee's knees...so kids...NEVER LOSE FAITH!
Mel Bay,,,yes! still have the 3 books, along with a whack of other material.
Thank you Steve Francis ! (grade 12 bass playing mentor).
I only played at playing guitar, for 15 years...still, copped a lot of stuff, lot of bedrock went on board during that time, never stopped learning Berklee with teacher...even have tapes jamming with a friend(s). sound like a novice, but i could whack out a lead. Then @ 34, it's now or never. Over the hump, auditions, more live and rehersal work than i could handle(never quit full time day job, candle at both ends for 5 years)...thanks dad for the work ethic. Just a maverick today. Now playing guitar lives in my amygdala...will always play. Today, i will explore and play. Tomorrow, will see. One day at a time. yea, Tim! never lose the faith.

Had lessons when I was about 12/13. Tutor insisted I play right handed. I did try, but couldn’t get it, it was just wrong. I write right handed. Gave up.

Started getting interested again in my late 30’s. Was speaking to a guy in a local shop, explaining my dilemma about left vs right. whilst talking, he handed me an acoustic and said “strum that”. I instinctively used my left hand.

Apparently, most right handed people will clap holding their left hand relatively still and use their right to strike the left. I do the opposite, despite being generally right handed. Kick with my left foot though.

Bought an acoustic and only (with semi regular practice), do I feel I’m improving, at 53.

I was 18, so it's been 9 years. My wife got me into playing. She said that I needed a productive hobby instead of just video games, and here I am.

I've realized that I've gotten much, much better over the last year. Nine years of playing the same things, and in the last year, I've learned to sing and play simultaneously, play lead, write solos, write chord progressions, and write my own riffs. I think I'll learn to learn songs by ear next. I need to learn the proper way to play "Helena" by My Chemical Romance. I've learned that I'm not playing parts of the main riff correctly because the tab I learned it from got it wrong.
