Does anybody know how much on average the maple cap weighs?

It occurred to me that if chambered Les Pauls can still weigh in the 8-9lb range, it's possible that the maple cap is a significant part of the weight of a Les Paul.

If that's the case, then if maple can vary in weight significantly, it will have a significant effect on the overall weight of the guitar.

Can anybody share some facts about the maple?

For sure it is a significant part of the weight....but Impossible to say a percentage (it’s too many variables in the equation) since a guitar it’s like a weight scale with 3 major plates; neck/headstock, top cap and body. Mahogany and maple are more or less similar weight (around 35lbs/ft^3 dry), and both can vary quite a bit between different lumbers, especially if coming from different trees. It can be a guitar with more weight coming from the body, or from the cap, or from the neck....that’s why you may find guitars with same weight but with one of them feeling much lighter because a much better weight distribution.

For the same reason a hog top Les Paul, does typically weight in the same range as a maple cap LP, maybe just a tad less than average because maple it can be more on the high side of that range than mahogany....but yeah, too many moving targets to say a maple cap it’s always =x% in the body total weight.
