It was my fourth. The third is still my favorite though — it’s a Strat my wife and kids got me for my 40th birthday. They went in this order.

96 American Standard Telecaster
08 PRS DGT (since traded for my 2nd Les Paul)
09 Eric Johnson Strat

Then number 1, a 93 Les Paul Standard.

I'm on my 13th Les Paul. It's never going anywhere. A few in there were potential lifetime keepers, but I'm glad I kept shuffling until I got to this one.

Strats, it took eight. No. 4 and No. 6 were both really good and probably could have stuck, but they were too pricey. The partscaster I just put together is as good or better than either at less than half the price.

The thing about guitars is this: You don't really know what a better one is like until you have it in your hands. You may think your current one is as good as it gets, until you get ahold of a better one. Then it's game over.

Ok, I'm a liar. I have since remembered four other Strats I've owned over the years, so right now I'm on No. 12. I have had lots of problems getting along with that style of guitar.

This 2013 Traditional Pro 2 has been my number 1 since the day I got it. I used to play 50s necks, since that’s what I started on and so I never really thought to try a 60s neck. Tried this one and haven’t gone back since. It’s also got coil taps and a built in boost so it’s versatile for gigging as well. It’s also got some sentimental value, as although I had owned juniors and an LPJ before, this was my first “real” Les Paul which I bought myself for my 17th birthday.

Guitars come and go with me - simplay because I love guitars and love buying them - so inevitably I have to let some go. I have a No1 Les Paul that is a Standard from 2003 as well as a No2 LP that's a 60s Tribute from 2018 that I recently painted. However, I must confess that my No1 Guitar - is a Strat. A Fender CS '59 that I'll never part with and is my main guitar when I play with my band. The other one that I'll never part with is a Rickenbacker Rose Morris (UK import with 'f' hole) from 1967 that I was lucky to get for a great price.

The funny thing is I had my #1 years before it became my #1. I was playing a 6120 for years and she was just not 'right'.
It became my #1 after I let a local magic-man cast voodoo on it. She went from clown-burst to bourbon-burst. 490's were ungraciously torn out and Seths Lovingly installed. New 500k's wired in the old style. Frets dressed and crowned, and she's been my #1 since. She's now a PROPER les paul.

I hope I never find “the one”. I go through guitars like fast women, and I don’t plan on settling down. I love lots of cars and guitars, and only one woman!

A pal of mine is collecting a Les Paul from every year of manufacture, so maybe a Jnr for the 59 version etc, he has some of the most INCREDIBLE Norlin era Les Pauls, some are just staggering
