I recently got a new modelling amp that uses these controls for each amp model. The res and pres supposedly respond just like the real amps would. I don't have a lot of experience with many of the amp models and I guess I am just looking for a "best practice" procedure to set these knobs.

I know that presence is basically treble, and resonance adds/subtracts lows. Beyond that, what is the purpose of these controls, considering the amp already has bass and treble controls?

Do you set the Bass, Mids and treble first then tweak the Res and Pres?

Do you start at zero, or put the knob at noon as a starting point?

Any input from you guys would be helpful.

Play with them. Tweak them, and go to where you'll be listening from and play. Then come back and tweak them again. On my 800, I set the Presence around noon+, but I like a bright tone and it compensates for the plexi shield I usually use.
The most important thing in adjusting anything on your amp is to listen to it from where it will be heard, be it a mic, from the bed, from the back of the hall, wherever.
Whatever you want the end listener to hear, listen from that perspective.
If you have to set up quickly and play, just put them both on 1/4 or so and play. You'll get by.

Sorry to hijack, M&M how well does the shield work with your 800 I have the same amp. 83 2204 combo. Keep the presence the same as you.

To OP as he said above, dial in to taste. I set my EQ and then make adjustments. My DSL has both and depending on the room I'm in I'll dial it in. Then again YMMV.

What amp is that?

I usually start with all knobs in the middle and then adjust from there.

Resonance I set low cause the louder you play the more bass frequency (which is what Resonance adds) will be present in your sound.

Presence adds top end to the treble frequency.

Looks like Resonance and Presence is in the Deep Edit mode (P3/P4), so you can probably leave them at the default level. Increasing Resonance will increase the 'thud' of the bass - useful if playing alone but you won't need it in a band as the Bass will have that covered; and Presence is most useful in a band situation where increasing it can help you cut through the mix.

So I my voodoo I turn the resonance and presence off, I get my tone first with my standard eq, then I add in resonance and presence to taste. Remember resonance is like a low end presence control for the power section of the amp, and the presence is high end presence control for the power section. So both fall after the preamp section of the amp.
