It's horrible. Just because it say's Marshall on the front doesn't mean jack. If you want a decent half stack, save your money and get a used 50w Marshall tube head and 4x12 cab. Buying an MG stack is basically throwing money away. In less than a year you are going to regret it and won't get much back on resale.

There are lots of jcm 800 and 900 heads and half stacks on sale on the net right now. Just in my area, I spotted about 4 different and well-priced 900 half stacks. Check the classifieds here too. MG is only a practice amp. Nothing more. If you think its going to give you the sound of Slash, Jimi or Jimmy, even with pedals, especially for gigs, you're not going to get there. I used to own an MG50DFX, so I know what Im talking about when it comes to these amps.

....if you're getting this to gig with you'll regret it later on. watch craigslist for deals on a used jcm900 head and cabinets can be routinely found in the 300-450 range. try watching out for some older amps. peavey vtm60-vtm120 can be found for cheap and they are killer amps. some of the matching cabs for the vtm amps had celestion G12K speakers in them. lots of options out there and it's a buyers market for sure. carvin amps are a bargain as well

Anyways- the groups that tends to dislike the MG are the inexperienced players and tube snobs, here is the deal:

1. It's solid state- not a big deal considering how far they have come.
2. You will have to work at getting a good sound out of, it's possible.
3. Consider your amp as part of a system and choose it with a purpose and recognize it's limitations.

I've played the MG's they are not nearly as bad as people say, just have to know what you are doing is all.

It will never sound like a tube amp period, but it's actually decent in the solid state realm.

I don't agree with the above post, nor will I ever have any use for a SS amp. They don't all suck. I know we're discussing MG's, but stepping aside, the Roland JC-120 is a great sounding example of a SS amp.

I'm sorry to disagree, but I tried them all when looking for a cheap practice amp. They suck. I'm not a total tube snob either, the Roland Cube and Tech 21 Trademark series are good sounding SS amps. The Marshall MG's are not. In the end any tube combo with a decent clean is a better platform for building tones than the MG's. Fender Hotrod Deluxe, Blues Jr, Crate Palominos and Peavey Classics with a decent OD pedal all sound WAY better than the MG series.

I had a MGDFX 100 before I bought my DSL50, the reason I got the DSL50 was because I couldn't get the sound I wanted from solid state.
The DSL50 was a huge improvement but I'm thinking it's still a bit bright sounding for me.

Steve.
