For warning others about a speed trap ahead.

Speed Trap Warning Sign Gets Woman Arrested | Watch the video - Yahoo! News

Before anyone accuses me of being too critical of the police, I'd like to say that I support them most of the time, and realize it's a rough job.

HOWEVER, Houston seems to have groups of cops that run speed traps on some semi regular schedule - I see them at the same trap locations a couple of times a month, and I don't think that pulling people over for accelerating four or five miles over the limit while descending a steep hill (As an example, that's near me) is particularly good policing.

Sounds like the woman in the video didn't do anything illegal, and just pissed off the officer running the speed trap.

Anyway, Houston traffic cops seem to be out on revenue grabbing duty a few times a month.

WTF! Freedom of speech? Hillsboro baptists are afforded the right to fly their signs about how dead soldiers are good and god hates gays, but she can't state speed trap ahead?!
This planet has moved into an alternate universe and I want off!

I can't see a conviction happening with this one.

Like many of the comments on the video said....obstruction of revenue. And people wonder why I have a digital voice recorder in my car that gets turned on every time I'm pulled over.

I don't see how it's much different than owning a radar detector, and they're legal here.

Radar detector only tells you once they're already clocking you.

I feel she was wrongfully arrested. Unfavorable condition for the police speed trap? Sure. Not illegal. Sounds like the cops got mad and made up some shit about her being in the street.

If they weren't breaking the law they wouldn't need to know about a speed trap.

Sure they would. Knowing that the speeders around you will be braking suddenly could be useful in avoiding an accident.

Not true, as well:

Car & Driver said:
When shopping for radar detectors, you will find an impressive list of specifications and features supplied by the manufacturers. The most important consideration is the unit's range and sensitivity. The better the range, the more time you have to adjust your speed. Not all roads are straight and flat, so your radar detector also needs to be sensitive to speed traps lying in wait around corners and over hills.

Clearly, the emphasized capability entails being able to detect radar that isn't tracking the equipped car, because light cannot bend.

Back in the 80's I used to make the morning drive from the San Fernando valley through the Sepulveda pass into west Los Angeles. The LAPD motor cops used to set up their radar trap along Sepulveda in what is now the entrance to the J. Paul Getty Museum. Speeding tickets were like shooting fish in a barrel for those two motors, who always seemed to have plenty of violators stopped.

I recall some enterprising kids who set out to, err, create issues for the cops. One kid set up about 1 mile ahead of and around a bend from the trap with a big, hand-painted sign that said, "RADAR COPS AHEAD" The other kid set up about a 1/2 mile the other side of the cops with a sign that said simply, "Donations". There were lots of folks stopped at that spot handing the kid money. This worked for about two weeks and you'd pass and see the two cops parked in their spot and talking together with near incredulous looks on their faces at their sudden misfortune.

One day I passed and the first kid wasn't in his usual post. When I got to the speed trap I knew why... The cops had both kids sitting on the curb with their signs and their donation can. It looked mom had also been called and was standing by while the one copper delivered a bit of a tongue-lashing.

All good things come to an end, I guess.

Now what about all the non-doplar radar speed detectors, that a radar detector doesn't catch?

There is a twitter account called KCCheckpoint, and people tweet in where they see speed traps, accidents, etc... I get text alerts from it.

Whenever someone tells me there's not a quota, that's a total lie. I got a speeding ticket at the end of a month without seeing more than maybe one other cop on that road, which I take at least twice a day, in the same month, and that cop wasn't running a speed trap. It's the end of this month and even though I've been driving more than usual I swear I've seen twice as many cops out and about and it looks like they're really aiming to get people. This was NOT going on at the start of June.

Btw radar detectors work. My uncle runs a top of the line Escort - 9500ix, newest version, I've seen it save his ass. Basically if a cop has his radar on, some do all the time even, it picks up within a pretty good radius, I couldn't give an exact number, but if you're not on a road alone or being shot with radar and have a head about how you speed, it' can be a lifesaver.
