My 01 R8 still had black side dot markers.
I know this is an older post but I have the same year and model and I also have black markers. I think Tortoise side markers is either incorrect or pertains to a different model.

Either way this is a good posting with great information. Thanks!!

Try this: Take it out in the sunlight, and look at the side markers with a magnifying glass.... a friend of mine had a 2000 or a 2001 and he wanted to know for sure, its a very dark tortise shell. My 03 is like that as well. :dude:

In 2000 Gibson made about 75 black top R8's for Sam Ash. This would be one of them.

That's interesting, Flick. The pots/caps had been replaced by the time I got the guitar, so no telling what was stock. I had contacted Gibson on my own and they had recored that the serial matched three guitars at the time, one of which was a 2000 but couldn't tell from the records what it was. :laugh2:

As for the inlays, they definitely have the rounded corners typical of that era. Here are a couple of pics.

If it's something other than a 2000 R8, I'm all ears. I highly doubt it's a 2010, though. I picked it up in May of this year and it already had been PLEK'd and had a decent number of mods done to it. It was nicely broken in as well. Add the inlays into the mix and I don't know how it could be from 2010. :hmm:

Great info here, but I can't help thinking about the poor bastard who'll have to authenticate all the "turn of the century" Historics 50 years from now.:D
IIRC dont all historic's have a "chip" inside them, so Gibson can scan the guitars to authenticate them when they do repairs or whatever??

So does this mean that every 2004 has a AAA Eastern hard rock maple top?

I like the spread sheet idea, one that is editable like a wiki.

Obviously it needs to start at 2008. and just go up to 2012, whereas the 2013 could be viewed as another category, mostly because something in the actual structure has changed. (Glue)

If I knew all the changes I would start it. :naughty:

Someone asked up-post about steel bushings in 2011, yes a magnet will stick to them.

The 2010's (I owned two) were excellent guitars I think soft shoulders were introduced in 2010. The 2011 is simply amazing (soft shoulders) and the 2012 has the most comfortable neck shape of them all. I do not care for the fretboard as it is porous and somewhat rough. Compared to the Brazilian, using glass as a descriptor, the 2012 feels like felt.

So lets get the list up, its six years behind! :cool:

Anyone know what year Gibson started putting the COA tags on the handle of the cases saying they were inside? Thanks.

This would be the year to do it.

2013 Changes

* Return to single ply Rosewood finger board (2012 Folly)
* More visually correct Inlay's (From 2012)
* Aniline Dye to the back
* Better looking Machine Head Keys
* Domed Machine Head Studs instead of Flat
* Narrower neck on some
* Color of binding changed to more closely match originals
* Steel Studs (from 2010 or 2011)
* VOS treatment is somewhat less
* Slotted screw on pick guard bracket (2010, 2011)
* Pots on some CC models react more like original Centra Lab pots.
* Hot Hide Glue used in neck joint
* Custom Bucker Pickups as new default pickup for the historic line.
* Vintage size Truss Rod.
* Truss Rod Sheathing Deleted.
* Studs are longer/deeper into the wood.

Gold Tops

In addition to the above changes

* New Gold Top Color
* New filler color and stain to Gold Top Backs

There.... I am sure I missed some.

Anyone can contribute. Correct the list or accuse me of blasphemy ....
But I was bored. :D

How about Custom Buckers as the new "default" pickups? Vintage style truss rod (no condom)? Also, aren't the bridge studs longer / deeper into the wood?

I know the truss rod is a lot different, aside from the condom being removed. They had to bore the inside of the neck differently to make it work.

I think they made changes to the bridge too, but I am not sure. The saddles will drop right out without string tension. So I do not think its a wireless press fit like the 2010 thru 2012. Also the screws are a real soft alloy. I had a few bend with relative ease.

In 2006 some R7's were also made with Mahogany tops. I have a ebony R7 with this from Gibson "Thanks for sending the pictures. The instrument does appear consistent with a 2006 VOS R-7 with ebony finish and the COA is correct for that period of time. This particular instrument is listed as having a “one piece mahogany top. Thanks."
