We've been rehearsing at fairly loud volumes and due to our limited space, I have to stand within about 3 feet of my amp. When I'm on the gain channel, I get the high squeal that I am finding is quite common with unpotted PUs.

Any tricks to getting rid of that, short of filling my PU's with wax?

Why don't you want to pot them? The only things I can think of are standing farther from the amp or potting your pickups... maybe rolling the treble off might help a bit but it's going to seriously mess with your tone.

:laugh2::thumb::naughty: Potting was developed for just that reason. Don't wanta pot turn down, move away.

And if you don't stop rehearsing at loud volumes , you will end up quite deaf! I didn't listen to advice such as that when I was young, now I have trouble hearing any further advice!

Based on my own experience ...
The biggest reason volumes get out of hand when practicing in small rooms is because everyone is trying to hear themselves over the drums.

Our drummer used to tape sanitary pads (with wings :laugh2:) to his heads to help mute them for practices.
This helped alot and enabled the rest of us to be able to turn down the volume to a reasonable level.

the original mini's in my '69 GT started really squealing at high volume as things started wearing and shifting around under the covers. I sent them to WB and he was able to repair them without potting to keep them original. Good as new.
