When I lived in a small southern Oregon community, the stupidity goes a step further when Murphy is added to the mix.
1. One day I sense something is snoop'n 'round the chicken coop.
2. I set up a havaheart trap (as I am a compassionate person), and low and behold, the next morning, I got me a skunk.
3. It's angery..
4. I call the sheriff, explain the details. Can I humanely dispatch this skunk? FUVK NO!
Can't discharge a firearm in city limits. Apparently, they think the majority of city dwellers are so damn stupid, we could miss a caged skunk 11 feet away (they can spay that crap close to ten ft.), so I figured I'd play it safe! So, they suggest calling animal control.
5. I call animal control..they tell me we don't deal with wild animals. They suggest I call fish and game...
6. I call frigg'n Fish&Game, they tell me oh! Hell No!..they don't relocate skunks..click.
7. I load up my pistol, go out in back, I look at him,..he looks at me,..we both look at each other
Then, his eyes shift down to the pistol in my hand, my brow goes down..
8. One quick shot right between the eyes and he is Down for the count.

So when did someone decide that the average citizen too stupid to dispatch a skunk in their own back yard, here in America ?
I had to take the bull by the horns on this one.

Why are allowing some to contradict common sense ?

Silly stuff, I know but we're just dumbing down at an incredible rate seems like.

A skunk killed my rooster and a hen, and some of my neighbour chickens.

I caught the bastard with a collet... had to kill him with a spade... got him first stike but still messy ... my problem was more not having a gun, here in Europe...

I couldn't care less if you shot him or not, but why not just let him go? What harm could he do?

:laugh2: You must not live in the country.

Out here we live by the three S's: Shoot, Shovel, & Shutup.

Froggy should have called you to come over and let the pissed off skunk out of the Havahart. You'd have been down writhing the second you got near the trap. The spray is like Mace, I know. Ran a long muskrat line with a friend when I was in my teens. We were walking the line one morning, and found one of the traps had been pulled out of the stream into some brush. We yanked it back, big mistake. The skunk let us both have it full on. You can't see, can't breath, and it stings like hell. After that we had a couple more end up in our traps and were dispatched with a .22 immediately.
Cute little buggers!

You gonna be the one to let him out of the trap? Better buy alot of tomato juice first.:laugh2:

Call PETA and tell them you found a poor animal stuck in a trap. Let them handle it.

Has PETA ever done anything but but protest?
On the other hand People Eating Tasty Animals has always made use of the critters they killed. I don't recall any of my rustic colleagues ever eating skunk though.

The number one thing I hate about living in a city is that I can't just go out and shoot pests when they become a problem... Dang city limits...

solution

a burlap bag, a rock and a river

or just drag the cage to a pond, river or creek and accidentally let it slide into the water

attach a rope if you want the cage back

water doesnt make as much noise as a gun....

I had a neighbor who threw a heavy blanket over the cage and lowered them into the river. they died very quickly, they don't panic... supposedly don't hold their breath so they drown fast. I wont do that.

We had a very big woodchuck that took up residence under our deck, we didn't mind for the first season as he kept all the skunks away....but come spring there was suddenly a whole family....so we set the traps. Caught all three, took them to an area that is a large park, with a river (its about 20 miles long) and released them in the woods....I couldn't bring myself to dispatch them. But now Mr skunk is back....he's hibernating under there right now....I know it....

The Woodchucks defense is crapping and pee'ing everywhere...and they are fierce when cornered....To lift the big one we needed a pole on each side though the cage, took four people to heave him into the back of the truck. the female and junior were easier.

Another way is to toss a heavy blanket over the cage, run a large hose and hook it to a car's exhaust. (suggested by the trap owner) that takes longer. And the you will deal with the a dead one.

I also considered a bow,

I too called "Animal Control" they gave me a number for a pest control guy who wanted $250 for a skunk and $100 per woodchuck....

OK I'll do it myself....the .22 would have been way easier.
