had he lived ... he was definitely using Gibson stuff more toward the end of his career. Would love to have gotten to hear more. What a loss.

I think Jimi being Jimi he would have moved on to super strats, then PRS and maybe Musicman now.
He was always searching, seeking sounds that were in is his head.
I like to think if he was around today he'd be in a hardcore dance outfit, pushing boundaries and creating immense digital soundscapes with Fender and Gibson being distant memories

I don’t think Jimi would have really cared what he played had he lived. I don’t think he was much of a guitar snob and he was so fucking talented that even playing a wonky-tuned 12 string acoustic he sounded like a walking master-class.

I think Jimi would have gone more the route of leaving his store-bought guitars stock and experimenting with a lot of amps, pedals, and studio trickery.

It seems to me that at the time he died he was trying to go more straightforward blues, and since this an exercise in pure speculation, I think that after that he would have gone in more of a Queen, Dire Straights, and U2 mode in terms of production.

I'm pretty sure he'd have been immersed in the effects world and wouldn't turn his nose up at the digital stuff. I could see him playing a PRS and having a Neural Quad Cortex on his board

I’ve only ever seen slash and frampton use one. To this day I have no idea how a talk-box even works.

Jeff Beck and Joe Walsh also used one for a time (listen to Rocky Mountain Way). A guy named Bill West invented it.

As to how they work, it's actually quite simple. There's a small amp in the box with a small speaker pointed up. There's a clear plastic tube attached to the top of the box pointed at the speaker. The other end goes on your mic stand right next to the mic. The guitar signal is sent to the talk box, which sends the guitar sound up the tube. You stick the plastic tube in your mouth and mouth out vowels, consonants and whatever else you can work out, which is then picked up by the mic. If the ground for the talk box is correct for the PA all is well. If it's not and your spit manages to complete a circuit to the talk box amp - OUCH!!!

Yeah, those names are coming to me now. It's such an odd, rare device that even the guys who are known for it barely use them.

I just did a quick check online and see that MXR I think makes a self contained one for under $200.

I might agree if I hadn't watched his rendition of Voodoo Child at Woodstock on a Strat. After that, all thoughts were lost. It's--imo--the greatest rock performance of all time. Never seen anything else like it.

I just finished reading Electric Gypsy, a 600-page bio of Jimi. I feel that whatever he would be using, it would have to have a whammy bar, and that he would be leading a 20-piece ensemble, incorporating a dozen new styles into his music, including grunge, reggae and hip-hop. And no matter what, there is no way he would still be playing "Hey Joe" and "Foxy Lady." He hated those songs, he was bored with them and he called them "rubbish."

I think, he'd have gone the route of Clapton, and almost all the other 60's innovators. His music would have fallen out of favor, and he'd have gone through a period of hibernation as disco, rap/hip-hop, metal, new wave, and other genres became predominant. (ZZ Top and Yes did this.) Coming out of that, he'd have surfaced in the early 80's with well crafted lighter rock music. (Hopefully without the ghastly ballads that Clapton churns out.) Then, he'd double down on bland basic blues (his roots), musically irrelevant, but still putting on entertaining shows, playing shows and working with those he inspired. (Can you imagine Jimi playing a set with an 80's Stevie RV? I don't care if they'd have left their best years behind, that'd be a hot show.)
