I'd do it. Looks good. Worth about 2500-3000, I'd wager. It's condition is great, and aside from the changed tuners and missing pick guard, nothing else seems out of place.

Id make the deal. That things looks in good shape and its a nice axe. If you dont like the mini humbuckers, you can always put in some p-90's

First off, I have to say 1973 Les Paul Deluxes are my favorite year and model Les Paul. When I had one and sold it, my life suffered until I was able to replace it. Hey, if those year and model LP Deluxes were good enough for Pete Townsend and Ace Frehley, well they are more than good enough for me! And the one you have available looks to be an incredibly clean example. Now, if I hadn't been able to replace my first one, I would do the trade, because again, my favorite year and model LP. That being said, sorry guys, I just don't see these guitars selling for that much money. Perhaps in music stores, but I've seen goldtop Deluxes in the stores selling for less, granted it was a later model with maple neck, so perhaps apples and oranges? Still, just about as clean. Could be had for around $2,200.00 and GT's supposedly demand the most money, but I guess the early ones demand more as well. Of course, the later 70's Norlin lovers would argue that.

So, would I do it? Yes
Is it a great deal? No
Can you do better with patience and cash? Yes
Will you be happy with the guitar, even if you overpay a little? Absolutely! That's what it's all about really. If you put it in your arms and you feel it's the guitar you've been looking for your whole life, then really at the end of the day, what's a few hundred dollars? People get so hung up on numbers. Someone sees a guitar they absolutely love, who cares what someone else would pay for it? People blow landing their dream guitar because of a few hundred bucks, even if it's over 2 grand out of principal. That's just ridiculous to me.

That's a gorgeous HCSB by the way, it's like mine, orange into red, without going clowny. Although clownbursts are quite cool as well.

do it. the correct tuners are easy to find if you ever want to return it to original. the stock tuners dont stay in tune anyway.

Play it and make sure you like it. If so, get it. The deal isn't that bad and that looks to be a real keeper to me. Everything looks correct as per your description. The case is not original, but I wouldn't let that stop me and those tuners are better than original and look good.

Now you understand why a 73 Les Paul Deluxe is my favorite guitar in the whole wide world!

So, how much does she weigh?

I'm glad you are digging the sound! I'm surprised no one jumped on you yet to put on P-90's, which I'm glad they didn't. I love mini's, especially in the neck position.

Enjoy it for a lifetime and never let it go!

Cool score! I also love the minihum in the neck. You can get a mini sized Super Distortion Dimarzio to fit the bridge if you like something more beefy.

Good buy, and a beautiful looking example of a DeLuxe from what I can see. Congratulations!

However IMHO, I would leave the P90s for some other guitar .

Those mini humbuckers are a really great pickup, and is a lot of what those seventies DeLuxes are all about. They have an amazing 'sound' all of their own, and don't give you the feedback often associated with P90's should you happen to stand in the wrong position relative to your amp.

BTW, I have had no problems whatsoever with the 'original' tuners going out of tune.

In your position however, I would be keeping an eye out for a set of the originals, even if you don't ever intend to replace them. Originality will always help to get a better price should you ever decide to sell. To be fair, my Deluxe is a '76 , but my point remains valid.
