Ok, i bought a R9 Wildwood faded cherry burst a few months back and like it well enough.. its a little too shiny and new for me and I'm afraid to hurt it. I was at my local music shop this week and they have an R7 2013 VOS model and it kind of knocked me out since my first LP years ago was goldtop classic and I have always loved the GTs. My R9 is about 8.2lbs and so is this R7 so they are both very nice weights. The necks are both are comfortable with the R7 maybe being a hair bigger. I've been offered a descent trade value for my R9 and would walk out with cash or more trade value for another piece of gear. The 2013 R7 is the model year with a bit of greenish tint to the gold and lots of changes that are very similar to my 2014 R9. They both have the under wound "Custom Bucker" pickups. My R9 being a Wildwood spec has the TonePros long studs and good pots with 50s wiring out of the gate. No sure about wiring on the 57 as i didn't think to fool with it.

I know it's a personal decision ultimately, but curious for discussion sake what others think and what things i may or may not have asked myself yet.

Just reading quickly through your description, it seems like you like the R7 better, so I would go for that. It should have stock '50s wiring as well, but not upgraded pots.

Sounds to me like you will never be truly happy in life unless you have both... :naughty:

You are going to lose on that trade. I would sell and buy and pocket the difference in cash.

Try to make it so you can have both. You won't regret it ever.

I believe the 2013s and newer all have the long studs now, but for some reason it's not really emphasized by Gibson.

Also, the Wildwood runs have the underwound Custombuckers. Assuming the Goldtop is a regular run, than it has regular Custombuckers (not underwound). So the pickups are different.

Honestly, if I were you I would wait until I had the cash to buy a Goldtop. They are always up for sale around the net and that way you won't lose money on the R9.

Not a good deal ,,,for you . How about this ???

Put a deposit on the GT . Then ,Sell the R9 yourself ...

The reason That store will give you cash from the deal is because they know THEY wil Sell it for more .They will make $$$ on the total deal ,Which you could have in your pocket and the GT . The R9 has more Trade value . The GT will be worth a lot less when you go to sell it ,,,,if you do at some point ,Again you lose and the store laughs all the way to the bank . Stores don't sell/trade to lose $$$ ,,,ever.

All LP's, for years now have had 50's wiring in them . Open up the back and take a look. That's something you should be doing before buying ANY guitar when possible .Bring your own screw driver if you have to ....

WW's CB's are only on WW guitars ,unless you get very lucky .IMO , not a big deal as pups are easy to swap out .

I always go with a magnifying glass, screw drivers and a camera that can take close up digital pics when I'm going to consider buying any guitar :hmm:

Start making some trade offers to cc12 owners they are lightly aged and amazing guitars. You might have to sweeten the deal with a bit of cash their way though

this is a decision you have to make yourself unfortunately. Based on you post it sounds to me that you want the R7.

I'd sell the R9 and buy the R7 if that is the case. If you bought the R9 new you'll lose money ;)

Put a deposit on the R7 and try to sell the R9 privately first. If it doesn't sell for more than the trade it wasn't meant to be.

Sell the R9 and buy the R7. Put the rest toward an HM RDS and have them distress it.

Then you can get drunk, rock it like a beast, even knock some furniture over with it. You will never notice the extra mojo. My favorite part of owning a distressed guitar over a brand new shiny one was always that reason.
